Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to give a holistic description of logistics service providers’ environmental management, which has been lacking in literature. The aim is also to analyse how the logistics service providers’ environmental management provides value to their business, and to discuss its role in their business. This research contributes to the literature on green logistics, which regard the environmental sustainability related to logistics systems but largely lacks the logistics service providers’ perspective. The results support logistics service providers, who meet increasing demands on environmental sustainability, by providing a basis for discussion of how to work towards increased environmental sustainability in their business. It can contribute to discussions, evaluations and understanding of the role of environmental management as value-creating and strategic for the company.

In order to explore what logistics service providers’ environmental management actually is, case studies of three different types of logistics service providers are carried out, and the environmental management of these companies are described in separate appended reports.

This research is of an explorative nature and the research design has been developed in parallel with conducting the research. The researcher’s personal background thinking behind the research questions and purpose is also presented in addition to describing the research process, as it has impacted the research process. The analysis is inspired by the resource-based view. A literature framework on corporate environmental management and the resource-based view has been formed to provide a background for performing the case studies and to help structure the descriptions and analyses.

The logistics service providers’ environmental management is related to compliance, internal efficiency and competitiveness. The analysis results show that environmental management to a great extent seems to be only of implicit interest for competitiveness at present and more to concern future competitiveness. A large part of meeting customers’ environmental demands today involves logistics service providers proving to their customers that they have an environmental effort, more or less regardless of what it actually includes.

In order to further explore the value of environmental management, to show it more explicitly, the logistics service providers’ ability to cope with change regarding increased environmental demands is analysed. In this analysis, elements of dynamic capabilities in the companies’ environmental management are identified and presented.

This research has generated several ideas for future research, first and foremost relating to organizational development of environmental management among logistics service providers and the development of more environmentally sustainable logistics services.

Abstract [en]

Purpose

Due to the alarming reports on climate change probably caused by industrial and human activities, the awareness that “we need to do something” is growing in society. And there is not much time – in 2050 CO2-emissions need to be reduced by 80%, compared to the levels some decade ago. In this a huge challenge is to pinpoint where we want to arrive, and what an improved future forecast may look like. Gazing as far as to 2050 would be accurate, however taking such a large leap can be considered as such a large effort that it paralyses rather than encourages action. As there is a need to start acting immediately to be able to alter the development, we have chosen to, as a first step, take a look at what should and can be accomplished during a shorter period of time, and start by gazing towards 2020. The paper aims at the logistics- and transport domain.

The purpose of the paper is to describe and discuss desirable scenarios regarding sustainable transport- and logistics systems by 2020.

Research approach

The basis for this paper is a series of focused group meetings in a “Think-tank” setting, where actors representing shippers, logistics- and transport providers and authorities were gathered into group discussions. The task given to the participants was to discuss what goals they perceived as both necessary to reach, and realistic to have reached, by 2020. Scenarios were built based on notes from four researchers acting “flies-on the-wall” in the Think-tank.

Findings and Originality

The findings of this paper are presented as a scenario, or a “report from the future”, of the situation for transport and logistics in 2020 when the development has become more sustainable. The data gathering and scenario building was initially focused on CO2-emissions, however an aspect that emerged as perhaps even more relevant was the more general discussion on resources and energy. The scenarios include innovations in product development and delivery, elaborations on the global centralisation trends, new views on delivery service aspects and collaborative initiatives.

Research impact

The paper takes mainly a corporate approach to transport and logistics. It provides insight into what can be realistic goals in a close future, and which changes are needed to reach these goals.

 

Practical impact

The paper can provide a basis for further discussions among practitioners on where to direct future actions.

Framtida miljö- och energiproblem kommer att beröra oss alla. En sektor som är särskilt berörd är logistik- och transportsektorn. För att på ett effektivt sätt ta sig an de utmaningar som bland annat klimatproblematiken medför, behövs initiativ från såväl myndigheter, politiska beslutsfattare, företagsvärlden som forskningen. Det finns idag kunskap inom vissa områden, men det saknas förmåga att implementera den. Inom andra områden är det bristen på kunskap som utgör problemet. Syftet med artikeln är att kartlägga kunskaps-, kompetens och forskningsbehovet inom miljölogistik ur olika perspektiv.

Kunskaps, kompetens- och forskningsbehovet har kartlagts och analyserats utifrån såväl forskares som praktikers syn på framtida behov. Artikeln bygger på resultat från fokusgruppsseminarier och en enkätundersökning. I seminarierna deltog representanter från varuägande företag, logistikföretag och samhällsaktörer. Resultatet från kartläggningen visar på ett stort behov av ny kunskap, såsom mätning och fördelning av miljöeffekter miljömätning och kopplingen mellan logistiksystemets miljöeffekter och affärsnyttan för såväl varuägare som logistikföretag. Samhällsaktörerna är den grupp som av samtliga aktörsgrupper, inklusive sig själva, beskrivs som den aktören med störst behov av kunskap kring miljölogistik. Forskningen spelar en viktig roll både för framtagning av ny kunskap och för spridning av ny och befintlig kunskap mellan olika aktörer.

Purpose of this paper

To gain competitiveness in the future, logistics companies will meet more severe demands on sustainability than today, which must be met in their business models. The purpose of the paper is to develop a framework for research into sustainable business models for logistics companies. In addition, a practice-oriented goal is to encourage logistics companies to grasp a more holistic view of their environmental aspects and opportunities.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a literature review in two steps. A structured search on key words relating to business model aspects and logistics was conducted. This search was complemented by a scan of academic journals focusing logistics research. The findings were discussed and analysed regarding their environmental content.

Findings

The literature on business model aspects as well as logistics issues in general only occasionally address sustainability issues. The most important result of this paper is a research framework for sustainable business models for logistics companies.

Research limitations/implications (if applicable)

This paper deliberately takes a wide approach to the business model concept, and is a first step towards defining appropriate research tasks and to further develop a research design.

What is original/value of paper

Literature on logistics based business models exists, however it is not developed for logistics companies, which are in focus in this paper. Furthermore, environmental aspects are not addressed in that literature.
