Abstract [en]

Nikolas Rose’s work on contemporary biopower centres the ‘biocitizen’ as a subject governed through freedom and made individually responsible in matters of health. This article argues that a focus on its conditions of possibility will enable a better contextualisation of the biocitizen as merely one subject position among others. Using a Swedish policy document on the treatment of depression as an empirical example, the article calls for a more heterogeneous understanding of healthcare, torn for instance between ideals of evidence-based treatment and patients’ selfdetermination, inviting further empirical and theoretical investigation of the active biocitizen and its limitations.

Abstract [en]

A growing body of knowledge within the social sciences is produced from the perspectives of marginalised groups of people, and often, western science is criticised as an accomplice in a male-dominated and/or Eurocentric hegemony where alternative voices are excluded. This article investigates the terms of debate of this kind of knowledge in the social scientific community: who can partake in this discussion, and with which kind of commitment? The empirical material is the reviews of Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s book Decolonizing methodologies. Research and indigenous peoples (London: Zed Books, 1999). Most of the reviewers welcome Smith’s critique of western science and call for a more inclusive alternative. The question of the analysis is how this ambition is put to practice. The analysis demonstrates that even if the reviewers condone Smith’s project, many of them hesitate to fully enter the debate. Many reviews oscillate between a classical understanding of culture and a postmodernist approach. The article argues that an unaddressed tension between these patterns of thought leaves the reviewers at an impasse. A crucial point is how we conceptualise the relationship between knowledge and context, and the author suggests that Sandra Harding’s version of standpoint theory may help us to reconsider the terms of the debate.

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore and interpret the diverse subject of positions, or roles, that nurses construct when caring for patients in their own home. Ten interviews were analysed and interpreted using discourse analysis. The findings show that these nurses working in home care constructed two positions: 'guest' and 'professional'. They had to make a choice between these positions because it was impossible to be both at the same time. An ethics of care and an ethics of justice were present in these positions, both of which create diverse ethical appeals, that is, implicit demands to perform according to a guest or to a professional norm.

Abstract [sv]
