Abstract [en]

The chapter aims to analyse how the problem of gender inequality in academia has been constructed in Nordic and EU policies, with a particular emphasis on Sweden. Inspired by Bacchi’s “What’s the Problem Represented to Be?” method the article investigates the presuppositions that underpin representations of the gender inequality in academia and how these representations of the problem have come about since the 1960s. The article shows how psychological and different ethical presuppositions form the basis for the problematisation of gender inequality and the policies and strategies aiming at achieving gender equality. It also shows that the representations exhibit differences and similarities between the Nordic countries and interdependence between the discussions in these countries, and that EU policies and regulations have had both a constraining and enabling role. The article ends with a discussion on what effects the different presuppositions might have had on the current situation for gender equality in academia.

Abstract [en]

A central focus of cross-cultural management research is how individuals and organizations differ across national cultures and how that fundamentally shapes their thoughts and actions and serves as a unit of identification. In this article, we critically reconsider the essential categorical nature of culture, problematizing categorization and questioning national culture as the primary basis of differentiation. We draw on intersectionality, an approach that helps understand how multiple categories are experienced by the individual, and on relationality, an approach that conceptualizes people, organizations, and their actions within dynamic patterns of relations and cultural meanings. Both approaches challenge the primacy, unity, and separateness of any given category, the a priori determination of categories (and associated boundaries) in research, and the nature and stability of boundaries. Based on this we advance notions of boundary work and boundary shifting that help explore how today’s sociocultural groups and categories, and the boundaries that separate them, emerge and change. We conclude that, while the extant cross-cultural literature has come far in identifying differences, relationality and intersectionality can enable cross-cultural scholars to engage in research practice that better reflects the complexities of sociocultural life. We contribute to theory by suggesting why and how these two approaches can be used to explore complex cross-cultural management phenomena.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In recent scholarship, the notion of precarious employment has become increasingly important when exploring challenges to working conditions in various contexts. Both scholars and stakeholders have highlighted the multifaceted character of this phenomenon in different countries, regions and labour markets. This book explores the emergence of precariousness in Sweden, a country that has traditionally been held up as an example when it comes to the advantages of powerful pro-labour parties and employment security. The essays provide historical and international perspectives on the issue, as well as multi-disciplinary approaches to explaining the problem. By examining the development of precarious employment in recent decades in different settings, ranging from industrial relations and employment relationships to consideration of regulation, policy and actual working conditions in different sectors, the authors, writing from different disciplinary perspectives, provide a rich and varied analysis of precarious employment. They suggest that the best tool for understanding the phenomenon is a power relations approach based on class, gender and ethnicity.

Abstract [en]

The European commission formed the first version of the Lisbon strategy in 2000. The objective was to turn the European Union into ‘the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion’ by 2010. One of the governing mechanisms for achieving this is the Social Fund. The objective of the Social Fund in Sweden is to ‘contribute to speeding up change and renewal within working life’. The Social Fund co-finances project that either focus on giving increased opportunities to development and renewal within working life through competence development, or giving increasing job-opportunities. Projects with the latter aim should enhance for individuals that are far from the labor market to get a job and stay through ‘unconventional methods’. In this report we analyze projects with these objectives and methods, targeting groups such as immigrants, sick-listed, disabled and youths. The report contains the origin, development and current state of the Social Fund, a mapping of funded projects during 2008, a qualitative study of project worker's experiences of inclusionary work; attitudes towards the project participants, methods, collaboration with authorities and discrepancies between project idea and actual practice. The report ends with a discussion on the consequences of project workers' encounter with project participants. Should projects or participants be adjusted? We characterise the project activities as hybridization between social work and education and discuss possible processes of inclusion and dangers of exclusion within the projects. We emphasise the importance of a non-discriminatory policy and suggest the implementation of such a policy in terms of equality mainstreaming in the applications.
