Abstract [en]

How are new forms of management received in Scandinavia? What are the consequences for work and unions? What are specific Scandinavian contributions to a decent and productive working life? Do the experiences show that another world of work is possible? In the Nordic experience there is no trade-off between equality and economic development.

Today however, these models of productive welfare and solidaristic individualism are challenged due to global pressures, financialisation and politics of deregulation. With this background twenty-five leading researchers contribute to a unique overview.

Nordic Lights analyses management trends like New Public Management (NPM) and Lean Production, as well as Volvos work and management meeting Ford and Toyota, work environment, union renewal, worker resistance, gender perspectives, the flexible firm, boundaryless work, interactive media, and the new economy.

Increasing numbers of jobs are of a precarious nature. Inequalities are growing fast, not least in the Scandinavian countries: The Northern lights are perhaps not that bright any longer? But, in spite of their international dependence, the Nordic countries have been different for a long time, and can be so also in the future.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The contributions to this volume are the result of the activities carried out within the frame of GEXcel’s ninth research theme, gendered Sexualed Transnationalisations, Deconstructing the Dominant: Transforming men, ‘centres’ and knowledge/policy/practice. The authors of this Workin- Progress Report were GEXcel Visiting Scholars, or a university Visiting Professor, at different times in 2011 and 2012. Most were also among the presenters at the GEXcel Conference ‘Men and Masculinities, Moving On Again! Transnationalising Flows, Technologies, Institutions, Theory’ held on 25th-27th May, 2011. Many of the other conference presentations have been published in GEXcel Work-in-Progress Report XV. Versions of some of the papers included in this volume were presented at the May 2011 conference or at the two GEXcel Theme 9 Symposia, ‘Rethinking Transnational Dominance: Men and Other Creatures’, held on 26th January 2011, and ‘Men … from Centres to Margins to Semiperiphery’, on March 27th, 2012.

This volume is of a work-in-progress character, and thus the texts presented here are to be elaborated further. The reader should also be aware that, as this is a report of working papers, some minor editorial modifications have been made to some papers, but the language of those contributed by non-native speakers of English has not been specifically revised.

We are grateful to all participants and presenters, to the chairs and rapporteurs of the workgroups, and also thank Berit Starkman an Claire Tucker for all their assistance in the arrangements for Theme 9.
