Abstract [en]

In this explorative and collectively written paper, researchers and archivists from the research project Children’s cultural heritage — the visual voices of the archive ponder, wrestle with, confront, and dig deeper into what it means to preserve and include children’s own voices in archives. The authors acknowledge that child-produced cultural objects are historical landmarks and significant parts of national heritage. The article raises questions about where and how the ‘doing’ of what is here called children’s cultural heritage takes place, what it means to archive from children’s perspectives, and what aspects of children are saved during these preservation and archival management processes. To collect, preserve and provide access to heritage might empower and affirm individuals and subordinated groups of people who have not been seen or heard in the historical past, in the present, or in future pasts. Children, as a category, is one such subordinated group in heritage contexts. Adults therefore have a responsibility to empower children by strengthening their position towards other social groups, towards society and the heritage domain. This article provides insights into the challenges that heritage establishments face in taking children’s cultural heritage seriously.

Abstract [en]

This text is an exploration of collaborative thinking and writing through theories, methods, and experiences on the topic of the child, children, and childhood. It is a collaborative written text (with 32 authors) that sprang out of the experimental workshop Child Studies Multiple. The workshop and this text are about daring to stay with mess, “un-closure” , and uncertainty in order to investigate the (e)motions and complexities of being either a child or a researcher. The theoretical and methodological processes presented here offer an opportunity to shake the ground on which individual researchers stand by raising questions about scientific inspiration, theoretical and methodological productivity, and thinking through focusing on process, play, and collaboration. The effect of this is a questioning of the singular academic ‘I’ by exploring and showing what a plural ‘I’ can look like. It is about what the multiplicity of voice can offer research in a highly individualistic time. The article allows the reader to follow and watch the unconventional trial-and-error path of the ongoing-ness of exploring theories and methods together as a research community via methods of drama, palimpsest, and fictionary.

Abstract [en]

This study analyses the visual construction of girls and notionssurrounding young femininities articulated by 15 contemporaryadvertisements of Nordic fast fashion companies, available on theirpublic Facebook pages in Finland. A visual discourse analysis identifiessome blatantly stereotypical and a few complex visual constructions ofgirls as heterosexual, caring, innocent, sexy posers, active self-presentersand self-surveyors, carefree and environmental activists. Theimplications of our findings, particularly in shaping societal notionssurrounding girls, are discussed. The study contributes primarily to theresearch field of visual commercial representation of girls by unpackinghow their complex portrayals can create an equivocation thateventually resurrects stereotypes surrounding young femininities. Itadvances studies on Nordic consumer culture by highlighting that girls’portrayals by Nordic companies may not clearly reflect the values ofstate feminism. The study can benefit marketers by sensitising them to how the complex visual representations of girls may (re)producestereotypes.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Giving birth out of wedlock was associated for centuries with shame, economic burden, and secrecy. Unmarried pregnant women could escape stigma by travelling away from home and purchasing a confinement elsewhere. They could hide there when the pregnancy started to show, give birth, have their children adopted or sent to foster care, and then return home. This article explores the social economy of this stigma by investigating the market for anonymous births in Sweden through newspaper advertisements addressing unmarried pregnant women during the period 1905-1935. It shows that unmarried pregnant women risked exploitation when entering this market, in which private midwives, private maternity homes and individuals offering accommodation and employment were all operating.

Abstract [en]

Private providers and commercial profit are features of today's Swedish welfare society, but the market was already an arena for the production, distribution, and consumption of such services by the early twentieth century. One of the private-sector institutions offering well-to-do parents residential care for their children during restricted periods was the Barnpensionat (children's boarding houses or child hotels). Since these institutions have not been previously studied, the extent and organization of such establishments are unknown. Through analyses of digitalized newspaper material, including advertisements, this article maps the existence and function of barnpensionat in Sweden during the period 1900–1975.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

During the 20th century parents in Sweden were offered full-board accommodation childcare at private commercial enterprises, known as barnpensionat. This study examines 689 advertisements published by 122 barnpensionat in Swedish daily press between 1915 and 1972. Focus is on how children and parents were addressed and constructed as consumers in and through the advertisements. Analysis show that well-to-do parents were the main central target group and that children could be cared for longer or shorter periods of time while the parents did other things, for example travelled. Professionalism, and healthy strengthening aspects of children’s stays at the barnpensionat were recurrently highlighted. Early on there was a child-oriented rhetoric, activities that children themselves might think were fun were mentioned. Yet, the advertisements positioned children, not as consumers but as commodities that money transactions took place around. Hereby the study problematizes how children historically have been made part of consumer culture.

Abstract [en]

At the beginning of the 20th century, pregnancy outside wedlock was associated with shame. This study discusses how this shame resulted in social and economic costs which, in turn, created demand and supply of various services advertised in the daily press 1905—35. A supply of discreet services arose to assust unmarried pregnant women, who were at rik of losing social status and wished to keep their condition and baby secret. Such services included accommodation to which they could withdraw before delivery, discreet maternity care and privately organized foster care and adoption. But many unmarried women also faced economic vulnerability due to pregnancy as they risked losing their employment and housing. Temporary positions and accommodation were also advertised to them through the market. Without money, desperate to solve their situation, these women seem to have constituted a sought-after low paid labor force, generating an exchange economy where it was not obvious who requested a service from whom, who was the buyer and who was the seller.
