Abstract [en]

Background: The recent financial crisis led to a significant revision of previous financialregulation. Previous research show that there are implications as to how new regulatoryframework should be developed in order to be effective. Regulatory bodies and financialintermediaries have different motives which aggravates the assessment of what impact newregulation will have.

Aim: The purpose of this paper is to, through institutional theory, investigate and analysehow Basel III has affected the principal-agent relationship between Swedish financialintermediaries and regulatory bodies. This enable us to discuss to what extent Basel III issuited to prevent a future financial crisis.

Completion: Information on how regulatory bodies and financial intermediaries view theregulatory change has been collected through seven interviews with people closely connectedto the implementation of Basel III. The empirical data has been analysed based on theories ofinstitutional economics and previous research on the topic.

Conclusion: The study shows that regulation which changes financial intermediariesincentive structure such as, an increase in information disclosure, affect financialintermediaries operations the most, since it enables regulation to become more enforceableand credible. The study further show, that there is a danger to maintain the current pace ofregulatory work since it might become a habitual practice with insufficient testing againstplausible arguments. Our study shows that it is important to visualise the full dynamic natureof the principal-agent relationship, in order to understand regulatory implications.
