Linköping University, Department of Culture and Communication.
2020 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The essay is about Ostens  vänner, agroup of Social movement. During the year 2018/2019 they have been active in the community Boxholm in Östergötland. It is a protest group against the closure of Boxholms ost a local cheesemaking industry.

The industry is going to close and move to another place. This essay addresses the significance of the movement for the individual, the group and society. How Ostens vänner have organized themselves as a group and how it has reflected the history of society in a small industrial community. Contributions in the various areas have been many, but also difficulties that have arisen during the year. The movement has also been active in social media, on Facebook the movement has almost 13,000 members. My empirical material is largely based on the four interviews I have done with my informants. The result shows that social movements can make a difference on different levels, even if the group does not succeed in its goal.
