Requirements Engineering in Software Development : A situation analysis of requirement related risks (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Many IT projects fail and deficiencies in requirements management is often considered to be an underlying cause. Media and various studies continuously stress the importance of this process as it leads to IT-systems that meet user and business needs. This essay aims to take a closer look at problems in requirement management within system development projects; more specifically identify requirement related risks in theory and in practice. Through an illumination of these risks, we strive to increase the reader’s knowledge and awareness, thereby potentially reducing risks related to flawed requirements processes. The requirement related risks were identified through a literature review and qualitative research. The empirical data presented in this study were collected through three semi-structured interviews conducted in three different companies.Three topics, competence, communication/cooperation, and requirement quality, clearly emerged during our analysis. We felt that these areas summed up most of the identified requirement related risks and spanned across the entire requirements management process. Through the identification of these risk areas a clearer picture of what may be the basis for the requirements related risks emerged in the essay.
