This thesis examines how students’ discourses relate to colonial narratives in connection to social science as a subject, and different types of current news that coincided in the Swedish media in 2015. This is done through a critical discourse analysis and post-colonial theory. The aim is to shed light to these types of discourses and problematise them. Furthermore, the aim is to give suggestions for research in the future. The investigation consists of qualitative research with three focus group interviews with Swedish students in the eighth grade. The analysis resulted in finding hidden historical events and descriptions of non-European countries which points to a post-colonial discourse. In form of intertextuality this thesis shows how some of the discourses are both Eurocentric and Christocentric. It also illustrated how several students showed an interest in non-Eurocentric history and a critical view on their own schooling.
