Abstract [en]

Visually sensory nature experience within outdoor education encloses significantly potential power. This study, employing a combined paradigm of quantitative design and qualitative probes, aims to investigate the emotion-focused effects of viewing standardized nature pictures, which are categorized into nature, city and object group. A total sum of 18 participants, recruited on campus, were randomly assigned to each picture group to finish the research procedures, in which an E-prime-based program was used to present pictures and capture emotion-related responses, using a battery of scales, mainly including MACL and NRS. The results showed that 1) the positive emotions of nature are higher than those of the city and object group, in which there was no salient difference. Similarly, in terms of negative emotions, city group is higher than nature and object group. However, there was no significant difference for the latter two; 2) Post-NR-All indicated that the assessed intensities of NR-All in nature are much higher than city and object group. On the other hand, no salient difference between city and object group was found. In addition, regarding Post-NR-Self among the three demonstrated that NR-Self in nature are higher than city and object group. On the contrary, both city and object group showed no significant difference. Moreover, viewing nature suggested no noted effects on cognitive and physical reactions; 3) Preference for nature is statistically higher than city and object group while preference between city and object group showed no significant difference; 4) The main finding in the qualitative assessment was that the structured environmental components in nature include tranquil atmosphere, abundant and diverse natural resources, and social activities, compared to city, where the individuals consider cities negative when factors exist like contaminated environment, congested living space, lack of green, overloaded life pressure, and interpersonal challenges. The principal implication from these results is that positive experiment-based nature experience was found and emphasized. Meanwhile, the dynamic construct of nature embodies the necessity of developing a trajectory linking human behaviors and nature, echoing with the idea of sustainable development.
