Christianity has had a special place in the Swedish curricula and still does. With the increase of cultural differences in a secular society such as Sweden, we are trying to find answers to how religious education is affected by society and what researchers think should shape the curricula. The purpose of this paper is therefore to examine how religious education is affected by the Swedish society, and what aspects of dealing with the subject in school is important according to researchers. The fundamentals of this paper are the studies on religion in secular societies and religious education in secular societies. This is a qualitative literature study and when finding data for this paper we searched the library's database using different versions of the terms secular and religious education. The result indicates that there are different sides to whether religious education in school should exist or not. However, religion seems to play a big role in society as there has been a resurgence of religion. Swedes are in general sceptical towards religion and it is not a big part of their lives, although one can still see several Christian traditions and values affecting society.
