Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore how Roma perceive and contemplate on their Roma identity. This wasstudied through interviews conducted with individuals with Roma background where their own stories give direct insights to their experiences. The purpose is to show if their situation is getting better or if their problems concerning segregation is getting enough attention. The purpose of the interviews is to exploreif Roma individuals’ have experiences of marginalization and discriminationand how they deal with these experiences.The research questions are the following:

  • Has there been a change in society towards the Roma since the migration crisis in 2015?
  • How do the Roma identify themselves compared to the non-Roma majority in society?
  • How does their ethnic identity affect their sense of belonging in Hungarian society?
