The yoga mat as a pocket of local order
2018 (English)Conference paper, Oral presentation with published abstract (Refereed)
Abstract [en]
Digitalization makes the world more fragmented. It makes almost anything possible to do at any time anywhere. From a time-geographical point of view this is impossible. Mentally we can be anywhere, but physically we can only be here and now. The opportunities created by digitalization also challenges our routines and practices in everyday life and can often create a lot of stress. One way of supporting ourselves in maneuvering in the digitalized world, and to reduce stress, is to practice yoga. The yoga mat creates a pocket of local order in which the individual has the power to demarcate its physical outer time-space and focus mentally on what is happening inside. In this way, the inner time-space is defined and can be refined.
This presentation aims to discuss if and how the activities on the yoga mat can enhance the development of the individual, to increase her capacity to manage stress and maneuver in the digitalized world.
The methodological approach is to develop the time-geographical concept pocket of local order to yoga. The pocket part addresses how the physical world is limiting the time-space. The local is pointing to the individual´s presence and mental inner focus. The order part is the individual’s power and capacity in various time-spatial settings. Our conceptual contribution will develop the understanding of the concept pocket of local order and bridge the inner and outer world division of the time-space approach. Based on this we will present a planned empirical study.
