A non-probabilistic approach to binary electronic fingerprinting

Abstract [en]

Electronic fingerprinting deals with the problem of object identification through the use of electronic marks, unique to each object. We consider fingerprinting for the purpose of tracing the origins of illegitimately copied and distributed data, so called pirate copies.

Using a binary model, we examine the possibilities of designing finger printing codes that are resistant to tampering. We show that under certain assumptions, we are often able to trace the pirates as long as they are working alone, or in pairs. Also, with the model we describe, the result of the tracing will be reliable. That is, our tracing may fail to point out a pirate, hut it should not mistakenly accuse an innocent user.

We examine a number of code sequences, and evaluate how well they will perform, when the pirates make active choices in order to evade our tracing.
