To reduce CO2e emissions is urgent, individuals have the power to reduce their emissions by making conscious choices. A common tool for individuals to get aware of their CO2e emissions are climate calculators. The calculators starting to move from being online to smartphones but there is still room for improvements regarding usability and ways of calculating (Mulrow, J. (1,2) et al. 2018).
This particular study has an explorative and open-ended design process. I explored what could be a product/service that helps individuals reduce their CO2e emissions by looking at existing services and involving users to find out what could be improved and what they desire. I generated a number of ideas that later were tested and developed to a prototype that was tested with users. The whole design process resulted in a suggestion of a new approach to design ”ordinary” climate calculators, which is to switch focus from yourself to someone else. I believed there were some people that probably would like to focus on others because of anxiety for their own emissions. My findings show that people not having control over their own emissions are not ready to focus on helping others decreasing their emissions. My own belief is that they are more ready to help others when they have control over their own emissions.
