Creationism: Five Waves and One Debate : A Study of Christian Creationism in the USA from 1859 until Today and a Debate about its Place in the Classroom during the 21st Century. (English)
Abstract [en]

The following paper aims to provide a picture of the Christian creationist movement in America from the mid 19thcenturyuntil today. Furthermore, the paper also examines the ongoing debate regarding creationism in the classroom during the 21stcentury. The paper is a qualitative literature study that uses the theory of history of ideas and is mainly a research summary. In the study, we found that during the 20thand early 21stcentury there have been five separate waves of creationism which followed the same course. However, the fifth wave, which is ongoing, has become something different and revolves around public opinion rather than the courtroom. The researchers chosen in this paper are rather sceptical about creationism being taught as an alternative theory to evolution. However, some are of the opinion that it could be beneficial for the pupils to be able to reflect upon their believes in relation to science.
