Abstract [en]
This thesis helps unravel the mysterious reality of how geopolitics influences proxy wars in the Middle East. This thesis uses two research methods. Geopolitics and its theories create the theoretical framework of this research, and help it move forward. Syria and Yemen are the two countries being researched. Syria’s position in the world today helps in answering many questions that are asked about proxy wars. Proxy wars have always been conducted in the most sinister ways by powerful countries, who have the wealth and resources to engage in international conflict and wars. Yemen is the second country in focus of this research. Yemen’s war has placed the country in a humanitarian crisis and the conflict has made international headlines. The wars in Syria and Yemen are compared to each other in order to develop a possible answer(s) to the research aim. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, and the United States of America are also part of the research since they are the actors and the driving force of the conflicts that occur on a daily basis in the Middle East. Lebanon and its 15 years long civil war is mentioned in the literature review section so that the patterns of wars which have proxies can be traced and compared with one another.
