Perioperative hypothermia: methods for prevention and their efficacy : A systematic literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Systematic literature review studying quantitative articles. Aim was to describe different methods for prevention of hypothermia and their efficacy. Hypothermia is a common side effect of general anesthesia which causes several physiologic changes. The coagulation capacity weakens when the core temperature drops below 36°C which can cause massive perioperative bleedings. Hypothermia may cause severe illness, even death. The result shows there are several active and passive methods to keep the patient normothermic. One of the most commonly used active methods was Forced Air Warming [FAW], which forces hot air into the channels of a cover. Both active and passive methods have effect on perioperative hypothermia and they are appropriate in different circumstances. The conclusion is that hypothemia will occur if it is not prevented. No single method is superior in all situations, the methods are appropriate in different situations.
