The past 25 years − and the past ten in particular − have witnessed the rise of prominent new research on the evolving role of academics in society. Concepts such as “academic entrepreneurship”, “the entrepreneurial university”, and “the engaged university” have attracted considerable attention from scholars in different disciplines (Clark, 1998; Klofsten & Jones-Evans, 2000; Perkmann et al., 2013; Etzkowitz et al., 2018).
