Mångfaldens praktik III. The significance of adult educationsystem in the transition of immigrants to work: Background delineation of a research project

The primary aim of this paper is to define the context or background ofa research project. The project exarnines the encounter between "immigrants" and institutions and measures for facilitating the transition of "immigrants" into the labour market and Swedish society.In this research, the institutionai practices will be examined from the perspectives of the participants and institutional actors in adult education and the public employment agency (arbetsförmedling), Pathways to work can take different forms, careers, time and complexityasa result of different forms of training and employment schemes available for this purpose.
The first part of the paper reviews Swedish research on adult educationand diversity in Sweden. This aims to inform the reader of the stateof research in the area and re late the project to existing knowledge and second to provide a holistic picture of the transition process emphasizingthe intertwined nature of the different relevant contextual factors involved in this process. Individuals within this process are embedded in different fields, each with their specific rules and regulations, practices, traditions etc. Finally, I will present two small pilot studies, a general methodological discussion, and an outline of the research project. The concept "immigrant" in this paper refers to foreign-bom persons. Foreign-bom person, however, can mean native ethnic Swede bomoutside Sweden. But in this paper foreign-bom "immigrants" is narrowly defined to denote ethnic groups that are constructed as socially excluded or marginalized ethnic group.
