Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study shows that there is an intensive verbal and non-verbal communication among students <luring ordinary lessons in the comprehensiveschool. This private communication takes part irrespective of (and in spite of) the teacher's educative efforts. The results suggest that the hidden pattem in this interaction is such that some students dominate (and learn to dominate) their classmates, whereas other pupils subordinate themselves and are trained to be underdogs.

The results also indicate that there are different signals of dominance in temporary groups compared to permanent groups. In the former, the leader usurps power, whereas in the latter he maintains power.

Leadership and followership tend to show different verbal and non-verbal signals depending on the emotional state of mind in the group. This result indicates that there are no general signals of dominance among informal teen-age leaders.

As leadership depends on the permanence and the emotional state of the group, there is a great risk for an uninitiated observer to designate an ordinary member as the leader. Such a judgement is based on sterotyped conceptions rather than on actual patterns of leader behaviour.

In conclusion, the leadership in a teenage group is constituted by the followers as well as by the leader himself. The followers encourage and permit certain leader behaviour, thereby limiting the behaviour of the leader, but simultaneously opening opportunities for alternative behaviours.
