Miljömedvetenhet och livsstil bland organiserade ungdomar
1995 (Swedish)Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
The aims of this thesis are twofold. One of the objectives is to describe and analyse environmental consciousness; in other words, to study the assumptions surrounding the relationship Man - Nature. This arises from a questionning of the supposition that environmental consciousness is an unambiguous phenomenon and consequently in a need to analyse anddescribe the constituent parts or aspects which our assumptions incorporate. These assumptions surrounding the relationship Man - Nature are studied among three different, organised youth groups. One of these youth groups is a young people's environmental organisation, namely the Young Naturalists (Fältbiologema) and the other two consist of two different political youth organisations, the Swedish Social Democratic Youth Organization (SSU) and the Centre Party Youth Organization (CUF). The second objective of this thesis is to describe and analyse the way in which the environmental consciousness expressed by the groups is related to and explained by their life style and group membership.
From the empirical material which has been collected through contents analyses, questionnaires and interviews, it can be seen that environmental consciousness among the groups studied comprise different constituent parts which are founded on a figure of thought concerning the relationship Man - Nature. Environmental consciousness is an expression of the perspective we adopt with regard to the relationship Man - Nature. The perspective which we express is connected to our position in social space, i.e. there is a relationship between our position in social space and our environmental consciousness. Thus, the perspective constraints which we express is at one and the same time a result of our social position and a part of the process whose object is to maintain this social position.
