Economic analysis of dental implants (English)
Abstract [en]

This study focuses on economic analysis of dental implants. The purposewas to analyse how optimal use of resources within dental care is affectedby the introduction of dental implants. This was done by i) discussing themost important methodological problems connected with assessment ofdental implants from theoretical standpoint; ii) elucidating methodological problems based on empirical economic assessments of treatment with dental implants as compared with another costly treatment; iii) elucidating the economic impact of a diffusion of dental implants; and iv) analysing economic incentives for an optimal use of dental implants.

The scope of this study is mainly methodological. The economicproblem of dental implants is discussed. Based on a formal model theoptimal use of resources for investment in dental health for a rational, perfectly informed individual is analysed.

The usefulness of cost-effectiveness, cost-utility and cost-benefitanalyses in the evaluation of dental implants is discussed. Whereas costbenefit analysis relies on welfare economics the theoretical foundations of cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses are unclear. Different interpretations are suggested. How to handle the cost for the patient in cost-effectiveness analysis is given special attention. The methodological issues in connection with measuring health is analysed.

Empirical economic evaluations of treatment with dental implants forthe complete edentulous jaw and periodontal and prosthodontic treatment for patients with periodontitis are provided.

Different strategies to handle increased demand for dental care aresuggested. Analyses are provided of the financing and reimbursementsystems.
