Neglected Children and their Saviours : Philanthropic Work among Poor Children and their Parents in Hagalund 1900-1940 (English)
Abstract [en]

The general aim of the study is to investigate how a new childhood evolved in the meeting between children, parents, philanthropists and physicians in Sweden during the first half of the 20th century, the century that was to be what Ell en Key called The Century of the Child. Social and health care work among children carried out by two philanthropic organisations, i e Solna Goutte de Lait and Solna Child Welfare Bureau, in a local community are studied. The focus is on childhood ideals, the children's social conditions and philanthropic social work. How children themselves and their parents reacted to child saving is a central theme. The help offered by the charities was not always what the clients wanted. Often enough the clients could influence the kind of help offered and they indeed formed their own lives, sometimes based on different notions of childhood than the charities had in mind. Another important theme is how voluntary social work gradually became professionalized. Questions concerning the cooperation between each of the two philanthropic organisations and the local government and the eventual merging of the child saving activities with the local government agencies are discussed as a part of the creation of the Swedish welfare state and its bases in social and political change in communites as Solna (Hagalund), predating the political reforms and discussions on the national level.

Childhood as a social and cultural construction forms the theoretical framework. A perspective from below and a gender perspective are being used in the analysis. The sources include previously neglected material as case records from private organisations and letters from foster-children.
