A unified set of APIs for acquisition and processing of scanning probe microscope images

The author presents a unified set of application programmer's interfaces (APIs) for acquisition, processing and storage of data generated by scanning probe microscopes (SPMs). We describe and discuss the shortcomings of current implementations (file format incompatibilities, absence of software recycling and improper image processing) and present a solution based on plug-ins and open APIs. Much of the functionality found in a traditional, monolithic SPM system is moved out from the core to plug-in subsystems. The subsystems are defined by APIs for microscope drivers, file format plug-ins, SPM image processing plug-ins and plug-ins for controlling the data acquisition. There is also a discussion about the internal representation and the problems associated with information reduction when data is passed through the APIs and how that can be eliminated.
