Abstract [en]

The interaction of large amplitude electromagnetic waves with plasmas is considered. We first show how a pump wave can excite sidebands and different types of low-frequency electrostatic waves, and then derive dispersion relations which include three-wave as well as four-wave coupling mechanisms. An expression for the pump wave enhanced electric field fluctuation spectrum is also deduced. In this way it is thus possible to describe stimulated electromagnetic emissions in the ionospheric plasma as well as in ultracold quantum plasmas. Finally, we mention the possibility of elucidating scattering instabilities even in the absence of the plasma. This is an interesting quantum electrodynamic effect.
