Abstract [en]

In this paper we discuss the mathematical representation of hybrid systems, i.e. systems comprising of continuous and discrete elements. Starting from first principles of physics, we set out a number of requirements to be met by a hybrid formalism. We then propose hybrid transition systems as a formalism satisfying these requirements. The paper is concluded by discussing the option of representing hybrid systems by means of discrete formalisms. A siphon pump machine is used as an illustratory example throughout the paper.
