A comparative study of KRAV- connected and conventional farms. In which one can the cows easiest perform their natural behaviour? (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to compare the KRAV certified and conventional farming in order to investigate which factors that are most favorable for dairy cows natural behaviour. The basis for this study consisted of literature studies which were supplemented by interviews of farmers, animal welfare inspectors and consumers. The results showed among others that KRAV certified farmers solely applied loose housing barns and that the dairy cows spent more than five months in a year outdoors. Consumer interviews confirmed that KRAV was a well known brand. Some of the conventional farms had their dairy cows tethered and some engaged in loose housing. The dairy cows outdoor time were limited to between three to five months a year for the conventional farms. During the interviews with the animal health inspectors it came to our knowledge that they valuate factors like longer pasture and loose housing barns, which supported our conclusion concerning the factors that would be beneficial for the animals natural behaviour. This was confirmed not only by the results from our interviews but also from scientific articles. Our conclusion was that the dairy cows natural behaviour was met to a greater degree of KRAV certified farms.
