Cleaner production in the Scheldt River basin
1992 (English)In: European Water Pollution Control, ISSN 0925-5060, Vol. 2, no 1, 26-33 p.Article in journal (Refereed) Published
In the past, in many cases industrial leaders applied end-of-pi[e technologies to meet the governmental requirements for pollution control. This approach meant that the cost of environmental measures passed to the companies. Nowadays many industrial leaders are changing their attitude with regard to environmental aspects. The integrated approach of Cleaner Production (CP), which includes the prevention of pollution at source, can be an important incentive in this change in attitude of company leaders. In addition to costs, a perspective on the benefits, such as the saving of resources and energy, is given. A demonstration project of Cleaner Production in the Scheldt area (PROSA-project) is showing the possible uses of CP within five companies in the province of East Flanders in Belgium and within five companies in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. An important part of the first phase of the PROSA-project - making an inventory of the interests of the companies - has shown promising results
