Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This thesis is done at Linköping Institute of Technology and Arla Foods in Linköping during the spring semester 2009.

Arla Foods in Linköping was inaugurated in 1978 and is known as a special product dairy. A special product dairy is working mainly with the processing of basic products, for example by flavoring creme fraiche, yoghurt and milk.

This work began with a comprehensive data collection and interviews with employees at the dairy which helped to create a picture of the current situation at the dairy that is described and analyzed in this repport. The purpose of this thesis was to examine whether the current way of controlling the flow of packaging materials could be improved and to explore the possibility of a new warehouse would bring. Analysis showed that there was room for improvement with regard to particular orders, safety stock levels and use of existing warehouse space.

Some of the improvement proposals drawn up were to implement better strategies regarding the order making process. These strategies came to focus on the use of economic order quantities, order point systems, and optimal order coverage times. This proved to provide reduced costs for storage and order const for the packaging products that these strategies are applied to. Today's safety stock levels was another part which came to be treated in this repport as these could be better adapted, resulting in the dairy can free money tied to the stored products, which in turn can be used to better purpose.

A new store planned at the site could resolve some of the lack-of-space problems that exist today. The report provides suggestions on what should be stored where, and what the company could save in terms of reduced internal transport.
