Abstract [en]

This thesis project consists of implementing a cloth simulator for animated computer graphics. The simulation model is chosen so that the application is suitable for modications of the bending energy model. Recent articles have highlighted the close connection between the physical behaviour of cloth and that of thin plates and shells. By altering the bending model, the application is able to create animations of surfaces with higher bending sti- ness than cloth simulators in general, at interactive frame rates. It also makes it possible to handle thin shells - surfaces that are curved in the undeformed state. Another feature looked for when deciding on a model, is the ability to simulate surfaces than do not stretch or shear signicantly. This commonly means a very high stiness coecient for the forces. This is handled in the implementation by using a semi-implicit time stepping scheme. The simulation of plastic materials is briey examined as well, by implementing a simple model for inelastic deformation. The work was carried out at the company Craft Animations in Gothenburg who, in their development of tools for physically based animation, may have an interest in the ability to simulate deformable thin surfaces.
