Abstract [en]

Within disability studies and feminist care research as fields, problems regarding "caring" have been framed in different ways that set the care giver and care receiver as opposing stakeholders. Both views have however tended to limit the discussions on care to certain issues. Consequently, other meanings and actors of care had become invisible. What this paper shows is that studying care as enacted in relationships not only provides an alternative way to discuss care outside the traditional disciplinary frames but also can contribute to a broadened understanding of what actions to define as "caring". Studies that ground their discussion of care in relationships already question the definition of "carers" as mostly able-bodied women and "care" mostly as instrumental tasks. What these studies also do is to broaden understanding of care through raising it as something ongoing and temporal. Both carer / care receiver roles and the nature of what one defines as caring can thus change over time. This can lead to interesting and broadened discussions in disability studies, where the word "care" has long been linked to dependence and "help" often limited to discourse on assistance. For example, disabled people as both carers and receivers of help can be a possibility for study
