"The conductor behind the scenes" - the producer's importance for the sounding result when recording classical music (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The history of music on recorded sound regarding classical music stretches from the phonograph of the late nineteenth century to the pluralism of digital standards of today. Parallel with the evolution of recording technology the producer’s role has emanated and changed with the changing ideals of time.

The purpose of this essay is to research what importance the classical producer has for the sounding result before, during and after a recording of classical music. The method work is divided into three parts. First a literature overview with a historical survey of the evolution of the producer’s role is made. That is followed by qualitative interviews with two established Swedish classical producers. In order to empirically evaluate the theory, two practical projects have been concluded where I myself acted as the producer for two different kinds of recordings of classical music.

The result of the study shows that the classical producer has importance for several factors influencing the sounding result. They are; artist, repertoire, acoustics, technology, interpretation, psychology and editing. To which degree the different factors are used depends much on the producer. A critical part of the producer’s job is about psychology and the ability to administrate a recording situation, socially as well as musically and technically.
