Abstract [en]

Thelargely unexplored question that this presentation deals with is howindividuals experience bodily changes and loss of functional capacity thatoccur over the life course, years after the initial onset of a chronic illness, injury or congenital impairment. The presentation is based on the analysis andcomparisons of results from two qualitative studies, one prospective and theother retrospective, which, from a life course perspective, explored theexperience of people living and ageing with various chronic illnesses andphysical impairments. The point of departure for this comparative analyticalphase was a recurring theme that had emerged in the interviews in both studies. The theme has to do with the upsetting, frightening or painful complicationsand bodily and functional losses that were experienced as part of a process ofcontinued illness or physical deterioration over the life course. The aim ofthe presentation is to examine and discuss this experience and the meaning ofthese bodily and functional losses for the participants. This will be donerelative to the medical sociologist Mike Bury’s conceptualization of theexperience of an, unexpected, onset of a chronic illness as constituting amajor critical and disruptive experience – a “biographical disruption”. In thepresentation I will argue that “biographical disruptions” may occur repeatedlyover the life span in chronically ill and disabled people and that bodilychange do not have to be wholly unexpected to be experienced as “critical” anddisruptive.
