Rewriting Shakespeare - a Contemporary Approach to The Sonnets

Abstract [en]

In this essay, I am going to analyze and interpret five contemporary rewritings together with their corresponding original versions by Shakespeare. These five rewritings taken from The Sonnets. Translating and Rewriting Shakespeare, edited by Sharmila Cohen and Paul Legault (2012) have been chosen because each of them represents a different text form which does not necessarily remind of the traditional sonnet form. It will be shown how later authors make use of Shakespeare´s material through rewriting, how this represents a contemporary approach to the sonnet sequence and how intertextual relationships become evident in the rewritings.
