Synthesis and characterization of magnetic (Cr0.5Mn0.5)2GaC thin films

We report on thin film synthesis of (Cr0.5Mn0.5)2GaC from a C, Ga, and compound Cr/Mn target with atomic ratio 1:1. X-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy reveal phase pure, high crystal quality MAX phase thin films, with all Mn from the compound target incorporated in the MAX phase structure. Vibrating sample magnetometry shows ferromagnetic response from 30 K up to room temperature, with magnetic moment decreasing linearly with increasing temperature, from 0.67 μB per metal (Cr, Mn) atom. This dependence and a large saturation field used in the analysis, suggest competing magnetic interactions and possible non-collinear magnetic ordering.
