Abstract [en]

The aim of this project was to increase the knowledge about what happens when a landscape or an environment is transformed and preserved as a cultural landscape/environment. What occurs during this process? Which discourses dominate when history is linked to the place, what happens to the immaterial aspects of cultural heritage, and what happens at the various levels of management during the process? The empirical point of departure for this project is Sør-Gjæslingan in Nord-Trøndelag on the northern coast of Norway – a place that has been exposed to the process of becoming preserved as a cultural environment over many years, a process that ended in October 2010. This project has thus been able to follow the preservation process during its implementation, which has supplied the project with a diverse and extensive material.

The report is organized in six chapters. The first chapter outlines background and aim of the project, research questions, theory and methods. The second part investigates the concept cultural environment and describes shortly the process of preservation at Sør-Gjæslingan. Chapter three analyses how the publicly sanctioned discourses and representations of Sør-Gjæslingan as a cultural environment is produced and presented, and compares this with some alternative local discourses and representations. Chapter four focuses on to what extent and how the immaterial aspects of cultural heritage are emphasized, with special focus on women’s life and work. The fifth part deals with the processes of cultural heritage management. In the sixth part we summarize the project.

Each author is responsible for their individual contribution, however, mutual discussions and exchange have taken place.
