Cennino Cenninis gyllene diadem: En studie kring vad ordet diadema kan beteckna i Il libro dell'arte2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the early-15th-century book Il libro dell’arte by Cennino Cennini, the author uses the word diadema about a dozen times. The most recent Swedish edition from 2011 interprets this not as an object but as a halo, a divine light. The earlier edition from 1947/2000 keeps the closest meaning, a diadem, and by that the physical item. Both a material diadem and an immaterial halo would be represented in gold in the paintings described, consequently the symbolism of this material is closely linked to the interpretation of the motives Cennini could be describing.

The time around 1400, in Florence, is an important period of transition, where a fashion that differs for men and women has just been born, the boundaries of the sumptuary laws concerning headdress and jewellery are constantly challenged by women, and the rise of a more secular world where an individual dignity developed may instead be an argument that the word diadema is an essential sign of a more materialistic lifestyle emerging. Several factors come together arguing that the golden headdress of the early renaissance played just as important a role in paintings as the divine light and therefore showing that not every item gilded is a symbol of divinity, it can also be earthly belongings such as insignia, jewellery and dress decoration.

Visualization Techniques for Surveillance: Visualizing What Cannot Be Seen and Hiding What Should Not Be Seen2015In: Konsthistorisk Tidskrift, ISSN 0023-3609, E-ISSN 1651-2294, Vol. 84, no 2, p. 123-138Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper gives an introduction to some of the problems of modern camera surveillance, and how these problems are, or can be, addressed using visualization techniques. The paper is written from an engineering point of view, attempting to communicate visualization techniques invented in recent years to the non-engineer reader. Most of these techniques have the purpose of facilitating for the surveillance operator to recognize or detect relevant events (such as violence), while, in contrast, some have the purpose of hiding information in order to be less privacy-intrusive. Furthermore, there are also cameras and sensors that produce data that have no natural visible form, and methods for visualizing such data are discussed as well. Finally, in a concluding discussion an attempt is made to predict how the discussed methods and techniques will be used in the future.

    Abstract [sv]

J.A.G. Ackes och Eugène Janssons vitalistiska måleri 1904 - 1912: En receptionsestetisk analys2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the thesis four paintings by J.A.G.Acke depicting figures in nature and four by Eugène Jansson from the navys bathhouse are compared and analysed. The analysis is based on the vitalistic ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche and Henri Bergson, as well as on different readings of vitalism as a concept. Their works are also analysed using the methodology of the aesthetic of reception.

The result of the survey shows that Ackes and Janssons paintings differ in their interpretation of the vitalistic ideas. The analysis of the aesthetic of reception on the other hand, concludes that an implicit beholder could have read both artists paintings as vitalistic, in spite of their different approach to the vitalistic ideas.

State of the Art: Elements for Critical Thinking and Doing2023Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

How to participate proactively in a process of change and transformation, to shape our path within an uncertain future? With this publication, the State Of The Art Network marks a waypost on a journey which started in 2018, when like-minded Nordic and Baltic art organisations and professionals initiated this network as a multidisciplinary collaboration facing the Anthropocene. Over five years, ten organisations and around 80 practitioners from different disciplines, like the arts, natural sciences and humanities came together, online and in person, for workshops, seminars and discussions. The aim was to find ways to create resilience and concrete actions on how to live through the change in culture, economy and the environment and to find concrete, hands-on methods to deal with the Anthropocene and the environmental crisis. As an outcome of this process, this publication takes a closer look at how we as practising artists, researchers and cultural actors can create elements for critical thinking and doing which can assist us in navigating the complexities of the present.

Mer än bara konstnär?: Att närma sig en triangelkomposition i begrepp, förutsättning och realitet2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to study the relationship between the artist and the market. Several questions are dealt with, such as does art and artists stand before a paradigm shift, why's it a bad thing to mention art and money together and what do the working artist think about the situation.

The thesis deals with concept of the artist from a historical and sociological point of view. Preconditions for artists are clarified with a focus on cultural policies from 1974 and onwards. Four artists have been interviewed to create a picture of the working reality, what they think about their artistry and what the best of worlds look like.

Var kommer betraktaren in i bilden?: En studie av konstens aktörer i Örebro kommun, deras målsättningar och verklighet2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Göticismen i bildkonsten: En bildanalys av tre fornnordiskt föreställande konstverk2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

: This essay consists of an investigation into the role of the artist as represented in a selection of self-portraits by the artists David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl and Anders Zorn. In accordance with Michael Baxandalls theories regarding the Period Eye, a number of cultural and social circumstances relating to the role of the artist influencing the self-portraits are investigated. From Erving Goffmans dramaturgical perspective the selfportraits are viewed as part of a performance where the role of the artist is acted out. This amounts to an attempt of a nuanced interpretation and a view contemporary to the artists time.

Bortom verklighetens utmarker: Symbolismens teori och metafysik ur ett svenskt perspektiv2015In: Konstvetaren 2014, p. 20-35Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with the painter Olof Sager-Nelson's relation to the symbolist movement in Belgium. Based on a number of analyses of paintings created in Belgium in the summers of 1894 and 1895, the links between Olof Sager-Nelson and the leading Belgian artists and writers of the symbolist movement are discussed. The conclusion is that Sager-Nelson was strongly influenced by Georges Rodenbach, and his novel Bruges-la-Morte, but that he wasn't otherwise influenced by Belgian symbolists to any great extent.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, discussions about artistic freedom are common both in a political and media context. At the same time, the role of contemporary art in Sweden’s society continues to grow and contemporary art has become more visible to the public. In the present work, we analyze the ‘artistic freedom’ concept by examining what it stands for and how it is being used. Through our discussions of the ‘artistic freedom’ concept we demonstrate attitudes and needs of the Swedish Art community. These discussions provide an example of how you can approach abstract concepts in esthetic research. The data used in the present study was extracted from qualitative interviews conducted with five Swedish artists.

    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to analyze the representation of children and childhood in art during the European colonization and imperialization through history from a postcolonial feminist perspective historiographical method. The aim is to reflect on how colonialism has affected the visual representation of children and generated the concepts of race, class, and gender. As a background, the paper will first present the historical concept of the child and the emergence of childhood from the Middle ages to the end of the 18th century. This will then be intertwined with the two main parts of the study, which will analyze childhood from the late 18th until the beginning of the 20th century. The first main part analyzes pictures of children in relation to colonialism in the Neoclassical-, Romantic- and Realistic artforms, while the second main part will center around Orientalist art. Throughout the paper, the pictures will be analyzed with a critical perspective of history and societal norms from an intersectional viewpoint.

    Abstract [en]

The essay includes thirteen pictures by Hilma af Klint, who painted these between 1906-1915. The pictures is a part ofa suite namned The Paintings to The Temple which extent almost 190 paintings. During her lifetime her life's work was unknown to her own period. She painted abstractical, geometrical forms and used bright colours many years before her contemporary artistcolleagues. Within a hermeneutical method includes different moments like, interpretation, description and analysis of pictures. The essay wants to illuminate and to lind her idiom out of a symbolic visual angle with help from the hermeneutical workrnodell. Partly making her pictorial language more clear and partly to find common factors which increase the understanding for her paintings. The author of this essay means that Hilma af Klint had some difficulties to understand the contents of her own paintings, but she had a clear thought that the pictures reflected the evolution thought in the Creation.

    Abstract [en]

The aim in this study is to investigate how the textile subjects in the education of teachers in textiles in Uppsala changed during the period 1955-2001. What has the introduction into the academic, scientific tradition meant for the textile education? The aim is to describe what developments occurred as a result of this influence on the subject area, by analyzing the causes and factors inherent in this process. The period under consideration has been divided into four parts: 1955–1961, 1961–1977, 1977–1988 and 1988–2001.

The research uses three different sources: documents, interviews and artefacts. The documents include both national and local aspects. To increase the understanding of the work and education 9 interviews have been made with current teacher educators. The artefacts show the transformation of the educators’ intentions and aims, which are expressed in the documents examined, into a physical entity by the students.

In the investigation of what changes the concept of practical knowledge will be used. Practical knowledge is considered to form the core of textile education. Practical knowledge is assumed to consist of action, professional knowledge and reflection.

Government directives have influenced textile education. Economical and structural assumptions have shaped how the courses have been run and what elements have been included in these. In the change that gradually occurred during the investigated time, the inherent pride in the subject area and the traditions linked to the courses seems to have slowly diminished. The redefinition of textile education as part of the university minimized the value of the education’s core based in action and domestic history. The continued production of artefacts within the course, suggests that despite the use of scientific and research terminology, the manual skills and action were seen as an essential part of the education.

Slöjden och skolämnet på 2000-talet2014In: Slöjd, bildning och kultur: om pedagogisk slöjd i historia och nutid / [ed] Sven Hartman, Stockholm: Carlsson Bokförlag, 2014, p. 178-196Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Även andra slöjdarter uppmärksammas i faktarutor.

    Abstract [en]

From The Blue Lotus, friendship becomes a prominent theme in the Adventures of Tintin. The intrepid reporter’s meeting with Tchang Tchong-jen, a young Chinese he saves from drowning, is a fictional reflection of Hergé’s friendship with an art student in the 1930s while working on The Blue Lotus. Friendship transforms Hergé’s comic book hero into a more realistic and believable character compared to the solitary and invincible persona he had projected in the early adventures Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, Tintin in the Congo and Tintin in America.

The theme of friendship is developed further in the later Tintin books as the hero’s circle of friends is gradually expanded. A problematic comradeship with the alcoholic ship captain Haddock in The Crab with the Golden Claws develops into a deep friendship that ends Tintin’s life as a solitary hero once and for all. The Tintin books also explores relationships that are at times problematic, for example the one with the San Theodorian rebel leader/dictator General Alcazar and the assassin Pablo, two characters that first appeared in The Broken Ear.

In his friendships, Tintin is unselfish and fiercely loyal. Even so, some critics have voiced opinions that his friendships are lacking and never include individuals of his own age or women.

In this article, the theme of friendship in the Adventures of Tintin is explored with the aid of classical writers such as Aristotle and Plutarch, and modern scholars of friendship such as the Italian sociologist Francesco Alberoni.

    Abstract [sv]

Islamic Architecture in Europe: Alhambra and Cordoba2021In: EPOCH, Vol. 4Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

The Muslim rule in Southern Europe has left a profound imprint in the culture and architecture of the areas it occupied. There are a few oldest European mosques and palaces which have survived until present day. Some of them, such as the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, have been converted into Christian cathedrals. By using the example of Islamic architecture in Europe, this article focusses on the distinctively Muslim elements in architecture and interior decor, and their influence upon European urban culture.

    Abstract [en]

Stereotypically Islam is viewed as historically intolerant of, and incompatible with queerness and homosexuality. This article challenges such perceptions. By examining examples of queer Islamic art produced in the past and today it analuses the shift in the position of queer individuals in the Muslim world over the centuries and argues that the relationship between the Muslim faith and LGBTQI+ community is complex and multidimensional, and cannot be narrowed down to a simplistic notion of 'Islam versus LGBTQI+'.

    Abstract [en]

In surah 17:1 of the Qur'an, the Prophet Muhammad in the span of one night jorneyed from Mecca to Jerusalem. In the hadith Muhammad continued his journey, travelling from Jerusalem to Heaven and then back to Mecca, all on the same night. While the Qur'an does not explain how Muhammad managed to travel so fast, later accounts related that the Prophet was carried on the back of a magic creature called Buraq. This article discusses various representations of Buraq in Islamic art as well as European perceptions of this enchanting creature.

Att kontextualisera arkitektur – Bauhausskolans gestaltade miljö2019In: Kontextualisering: teoretiska perspektiv på konstvetenskap 2 / [ed] Hans Hayden, Stockholm: Stockholm University Press, 2019, p. 121-141Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Art and Visual Communication.

Men ny teknik skapar nya forutsättningar även for äldre medier (såsom t raditionella böcker).

    Abstract [en]

With concentration on the art form sound art and the artistic treatment of sound, this essay investigates an interaction between the fine arts and popular culture. The focus is on participants within popular culture that used artistic strategies with roots in the fin arts. The study traces sound arts historical background and the events that contributed to the fact that it is an interdisciplinary art form. The pop-cultural art world’s establishment as a social organization where artistic activity is possible is studied.
