    Abstract [en]

    This study examined the validity and reliability of the Assessment of Work Performance (AWP) using Rasch analysis. The AWP was administered to 365 clients with a variety of work-related problems. Rasch analysis and principal component analysis were used to examine the appropriateness of the rating scales and unidimensionality of AWP items. The person-response validity, internal consistency, targeting appropriateness, and differential item function were also analyzed. The Rasch analysis confirmed the 4-point rating scale, and the item set met the criteria of unidimensionality. The AWP exhibited satisfactory person-response validity and internal consistency. Among the three subdomains, the targeting of item-difficulty was sufficient in the motor skills and process skills subdomains. Differential item functioning was found across gender and diagnoses. This study presented evidence to support that the AWP functioned as a reliable and valid assessment in assessing work performance.

    Abstract [en]

    This study addresses how help is provided for pupils with physical disabilities and how school assistants influence their participation in school. Data were collected through field observations and interviews with seven pupils between 7 and 15 years old and with each pupil’s teacher and assistant. The analysis resulted in a description of features that influenced how help was provided and the consequences in school for the pupil with disabilities. A major finding was that the assistants could both facilitate and hinder participation. We concluded that an awareness of the priority the pupils place on social participation with their peers is needed to ensure effective and flexible support is made available to pupils with disabilities.

    Abstract [en]

    An area of concern for occupational therapy is to increase preventive interventions among relatively healthy elderly individuals. The purpose of this study was to explore occupational performance problems among 85-year-old women and men in relation to demographic data, mental health, and health-related quality of life. Participants completed a postal questionnaire including the EuroQoL health-related quality of life measurement. Instruments used during a home visit were the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, the Mini-Mental State Examination, and the Geriatric Depression scale. The sample comprised 380 individuals. Women experienced poorer health and more occupational performance problems in community management, household management, and quiet leisure than men. Impaired cognitive function, lower self-rated health, and higher risk of depression correlated with a larger number of occupational performance problems. Intervention planning should be based on individual perceptions of meaningful occupations and environmental considerations.

    Abstract [en]

    This study explores how 85-year-olds in Sweden perceive participation and autonomy in their life situations in relation to health-related quality of life and gender. A postal questionnaire included questions on socio-demographics, social network, assistive technology, community assistance, and the EQ-5D. During a home visit, an occupational therapist evaluated perceived participation and autonomy using the Impact on Participation and Autonomy Questionnaire. The majority perceived their participation as sufficient. Women had greater limitations than men in indoor and outdoor autonomy.  Only a few individuals reported many or severe problems with participation, mainly in mobility and leisure. Not having friends nearby, no close contact with neighbors, and living in community housing increased the risk of perceived problems. Sufficient participation was positively associated with higher HRQoL and facilitating participation is an area of interest for occupational therapists.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to uncover how people with dementia respond to the problems and changes they experience in everyday occupations. Seven participants with dementia were included. Data were collected by means of repeated interviews and observations that focused on the person's experiences of competence and management in everyday occupations. The analysis was carried out from within a phenomenological perspective and resulted in a structure describing management strategies. It was concluded that the participants used a wide variety of strategies. Some strategies were directed toward managing the altered conditions caused by the disease while others served the purpose of responding to the occupational problems of everyday life. The latter strategies were of three types based mainly on environment, habituation, and cognition. Overall, the implicit and explicit cognitive awareness underpinning many strategies seems to call for great caution when assuming that people with dementia soon lose their awareness of disability.

    The aim of this study was to uncover and describe the meanings and motives for engagement in self-chosen daily life occupations for elderly individuals with Alzheimer's disease dwelling in the community. Six participants with Alzheimer's disease were included. Data were collected through repeated interviews and observations focusing on their motives for their self-chosen occupational engagement and the significance of the daily occupations. The analysis used a qualitative comparative and interpretative method. The findings show that the participants' occupations supported their ordinary pattern of everyday life and provided them with an opportunity to be in a coherent context. The occupations also allowed them to experience and communicate autonomy and certain characteristics of their identity and provided them with a private sphere. The findings revealed certain crucial but double-edged environmental keys to occupation. By identifying and supporting everyday occupations with personal meaning and value, therapists and caregivers may contribute to the well-being of individuals with Alzheimer's disease living in their own homes.
