    Abstract [en]

Abstract. The Thymus Controversy. Elis Sandberg and the controversial cancer drug THX in Sweden 1952 – 1989

This article explores the controversy surrounding Swedish veterinary Elis Sandberg and the alternative cancer drug THX from the early 1950’s up until Sandberg’s death in 1989. THX was an extract for injection made from calves’ thymus glands, as Sandberg − contrary to the medical community − was convinced that the thymus gland was an important agent in the body’s defense against cancer. The aim of the article is to outline the key themes and turning points of the conflict, but also to explain how and why it erupted and continued for decades. The controversy is examined in connection to a broad range of contexts, such as conventional medicine, health care policies, medical jurisdiction and political change. Thereby, the article shows how a lack of legislation on pharmaceutical trials, government attempts to delegitimize alternative medicine, a reformed health care system and a group of cancer patients in desperate need of effective treatment, created a cultural and structural space for THX. Further, it is discussed how early attempts at closing the controversy using scientific arguments failed, and later ones created public outcry, resonating with the growing critique of medicine and authorities in general in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Analytically, special attention is paid to the roles and changing meanings assigned to patients during the course of the controversy. It is suggested that the closure of the conflict may, at least in part, have been due to an increasing cultural relevance of patients as advocates for individual choice in medical treatment in the 1980’s.

Keywords: controversial science, patient advocacy, history of medicine, Swedish welfare state, science and technology studies.

    Abstract [en]

Anna Maria van Schurman was in more than one aspect an  unconventional woman in her own lifetime. As a gifted scholar in many  foreign and ancient languages, as well as in philosophy and theology,  she corresponded with other learned men and women all over Europe. She  achieved international renown for her own defence of scholarly  activity of women. Life and work of this Dutch femme savante of  the 17th Century has thus far been studied by theologians,  philosophers, literary scholars, historians, pedagogues and art  historians, each concentrating on specific aspects of Van Schurman's  biography or work. A rather fragmented image of this scholar was the  result.   This interdependent collection of essays describes the life and work  of Anna Maria van Schurman from an interdisciplinary - or  rather multidisciplinary - approach and will outline a more  integrated yet at the same time subtly differentiated picture. Nine  contributions - from the disciplines of philosophy, theology,  Dutch language and literature, intellectual and art history, and  women's studies - partly based on new source material, shed  light on Van Schurman's ideas on erudition and femininity, ethics and  philosophy, as well as on her religious beliefs, within the context of  the early modern intellectual community to which she belonged. Audience: This collection of essays will therefore command the  interest not only of historians, but also of scholars and students in  theology, philosophy, art history, and women's studies.

    Abstract [en]

"The hand on the paper. On personal archives and the materiality of celebrity". The present article takes its departure in the early 19th century and the growing practice of collecting manuscripts and letters written by famous individuals. While positivist claims have under- scored the rational and scientific nature of archives and archival material, the article focuses on the material and emotional incentives behind such endeavors. Handwritten documents were not only cherished and preserved because of the knowledge they might contain, but also for constituting physical links to historical bodies. They were carriers of the aura of ce- lebrity and mediators of presence. More explicitly such incitements per- vaded the collections of 19th century museums where manuscripts and autographs were often put on display next to portraits, busts, clothes and other kinds of memorabilia. Independently of their substances and contents such objects were invested with biographical significance. Rather than accentuating a history specific to the archive, the article points to the trans-institutional practices through which a cultural heritage dedicated to the commemoration and veneration of national heroes was formed.
