Johanna, Moa and I'm every lesbian: gender, sexuality and class in Norrköping's industrial landscape2018In: Gender and heritage: performance, place and politics / [ed] Wera Grahn, Ross J. Wilson, London: Routledge, 2018, 1, p. 17-29Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, we use the competing narratives and performances of four guided walks as the basis for a discussion of heritage in the intersection of gender, sexuality and class in the urban landscape of Norrköping, Sweden. Three of the walks focus on the life of straight, white, working-class women, while one offers a lesbian narrative thus disrupting the other walks. All the walks dealt with are part of recent projects to render female experiences visible so as to connect to current agendas and include them in the heritage for the future. They also testify to the difficulties of incorporating social complexity and intersectionality in heritage productions such as city walks.

Alkoholparadiset: En studie om svenska turisters syn på alkohol i Thailand2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to highlight Swedish citizens with foreign backgrounds which have experienced discrimination and racialization in global travel.  The study analyzed whether Swedes with a foreign background may experience some of the Western World travel privileges when travelling abroad. It also analyzes the differences in international travel between Swedish tourists without a foreign background and Swedish tourists with a foreign background. The study starts from a postcolonial perspective. The methodology used in the study is a qualitative study, in which seven Swedes with foreign backgrounds were interviewed for the collection of material analyzed from a discourse analytical perspective. The result shows that Swedes with a foreign background see themselves as privileged in global travel. Through the Swedish passport, they have had the opportunity to travel. However, they have found their freedom restricted to a certain extent. Several of the respondents have repeatedly been discriminated in their travels, which they believe is based on their origin. This type of discrimination is based on post-colonialism, where we and them, black and white, are seen as each other contrasts which create upper and lower orders.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explore the Swedish site Funbeat which is a space dedicated to people who share an interest in exercising in general, and running in particular. By applying a netnographic analysis, I will investigate if Funbeat matches the criteria of a participatory culture and how the members manage to establish a collective intelligence within the community. In order to achieve this, I will analyze the interactivity between the participants which occurs in discussion threads concerning injuries related to running, in the sites discussion forum. The results will then be discussed in relation to previous research within the field for participatory culture, collective intelligence and interactivity.

The outcome of the study revealed that Funbeat can be regarded as very good example of a participatory culture. By each member sharing their individual knowledge in matters regarding injuries, a collective intelligence was established. This knowledge has been acquired by personal experience, by consulting a physiotherapist or by sharing information which intend to serve as self-help for other members.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

We have chosen to study the sustainability policy for two famous hotels that located in the middle of Norrkoping. The hotels are The Lamp and the Best Western Princess Hotel, they have different standards about foodservice, but they have common goals about environmental requirements that should be implemented. The environmental requirements imply that the hotels should work with sustainability policy to become environmental certificated for example about food, cleaning and waste management.

The purpose with this essay is to see if the chosen hotels work with the sustainability policy and environmental aspects that leads to the sustainability tourism in the hotel sector.

To be able to study these described environmental aspects and to also get answers on our question formulations, we have interviewed persons that work in the hotels within the area that we have chosen to focus on. With the help of our informants’ knowledge and our theory connection to sustainability tourism, we have analyzed the hotels work with environmental performance standards and sustainability tourism. We have also discussed how the hotels see themselves as environmental-friendly from without the touristy perspective.

The results we got on this essay were:

    • Both the hotels have daily routines for cleaning and waste management.
    • The interviewed persons are aware about the environmental work and the requests that refer to restrain the negative environmental effect.
    • The food products and service that the hotels use are environmental-friendly.

    Abstract [sv]

Folkhälsoskillnaderna består mellan Norrköping och Linköping [Public health differences between »the twin cities« persist].2019In: Läkartidningen, ISSN 0023-7205, E-ISSN 1652-7518, Vol. 116, article id FI6HArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

A decade ago, major public health differences between two neighboring, equal sized large Swedish cities, Norrköping and Linköping (»the Twin cities«) were revealed. These differences were considerable for cardiovascular mortality and life expectancy. An important finding was that cardiovascular mortality rates for men and women in the city of Norrköping were highest compared to other major Swedish cities. In this follow-up, a decade later, cardiovascular mortality rates are still highest for the Norrköping population in comparison to the largest Swedish cities. There are also still profound and major public health differences between these twin cities. The differences seem to persist over time. These differences could not be explained by differences in health care, but are rather reflecting different social history and socioeconomic and life style differences in these two cities.

Ett stort evenemang - En liten stad: Synen på Vätternrundan genom fem representanter2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Vätternrundan is an annual sporting event that takes place in the Swedish town Motala since 1966. It is one of the world largest recreational bicycle rides and attracts over 20 000 participants each year. This study focuses on event effects and how an event can be of value within the principles of place marketing. Within this study five representatives were interviewed with semi-structured interviews.

The results show that the representatives describe Vätternrundan as a positive event which mostly generates positive effects for the city itself and for the people living and working there. The effects consist of the events ability to create awareness of the place, the possibility to extend the tourism season and several social effects like solidarity and interaction.

The result also shows that Vätternrundan is a well-known brand and because of this it can be used as an advantage in place marketing. The event also provides the place with an activity and a reason to travel there. The combination of the long sporting history in Motala and the sporting event Vätternrundan also provide Motala with a chance to differentiate themselves in relation to other places where sport is a unique part of the city.

Food and Sustainable Tourism: A study of authenticity and organic food in a customer supply perspective2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The tourism industry has a large impact on the environment’s health and tourists’ behaviours as well as consumption attitudes have an important role. Tourists’ food decisions and engagements in sustainable food could encourage the tourism operators to improve their environmental burdens. This essay investigates the experience of organic food as a part of the sustainable development within the tourism industry. A dualistic authenticity framework has been applied and a method to measure and analyse perceived authenticity has been drawn from the literature. Questionnaires were handed out to the guests and the staff at two Swedish hotels. The results revealed that there are several dimensions in the meeting between the customers and the operators that arrange food experiences in touristic contexts. There is an interest for the question of organic food as a part of the environmental sustainable development, both relative to the contemporary tourism industry and for the future convention to a more sustainable development in the tourism industry. The results presented that organic food is experienced as a central concept that could be a part of and have an important role for the future sustainable development within the tourism industry. An important part of this is the importance to be aware of the meeting between the customers and the operators. Sweden has a potential to accomplish a more sustainable tourism industry in the future, but more research and educations with focus on the subject needs to be made.

SCIENTIFIC PHILANTHROPY AND WELFARE POLITICS OF SOLIDARITY: A discussion of the roots of the Swedish welfare state2016In: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 41, no 1, p. 110-131Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

So far, studies of Swedish 20th-century social policy have emphasized the differences between the voluntary aid common around 1900 and the solidarity of welfare policy at mid-century. Means tests have been described as central instruments in the voluntary social work, while the welfare state was built on general principles of care. The question is, however, if the differences between the earlier and later forms of social policy can be characterized in such simple terms. A comparison has been made of departure points found in the social policies of the two periods. The results confirm that a significantly new way of thinking had taken shape in the years around the Second World War, but the study also shows that that the ideas concerning the welfare state contain threads that can be traced back to the scientific philanthropy of a few years earlier. The idea of social engineering was nothing new, and the idea that rights could be exchanged for duties had still not been deserted in the 1940s. In conclusion it can be said that the welfare state and the welfare politics of solidarity in several respects were built upon the principles of care that were formulated in about 1900.

PERSPECTIVES ON THE RISE AND FALL OF SWEDISH CARDIAC EPIDEMICS: The cases of Linköping and Norrköping2016In: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 41, no 1, p. 32-53Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) can be described as an ongoing epidemic, although a very protracted one, lasting more than 100 years. Cardiovascular diseasesstill top mortality rates in the world today, accounting for about 30% of all deaths around the globe. But it is in the industrialized world that CVD dominate, although differences are great among various regions. Myocardial infarctions are significantly more common in Sweden than in southern Europe, but less common than in Eastern Europe. The overall question concerns the consequences for health in areas on the road to a post-industrial society. Over the years a clearer link has become visible between lifestyle and health. In Sweden, infectious diseases diminished as result of rising living standards. At the same time cardiovascular diseases were beginning their upward phase, reaching a peak in the 1960s. Deaths due to CVD bring to light significant discrepancies related to socio-economic and cultural factors. A comparison of the Swedish twin cities Linkoping and Norrkoping show considerable differences in death rates in favour of Linkoping, amounting to about 30% fewer in the 1920s with a tendency toward rising differences thereafter. A preliminary investigation of diagnoses has shown that links commonly made between health and socio-economic patterns need revision. The differences in cardiovascular morbidity show another pattern than was expected. It is obvious that the neighbourhood environments themselves have significance, and that the inequalities need additional research based on complementary explanatory models.

Swedish politicians preferences regarding the privatisation of elderly care2017In: Local Government Studies, ISSN 0300-3930, E-ISSN 1743-9388, Vol. 43, no 1, p. 1-21Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1990s, Sweden has embarked on a series of market reforms in public services, aiming for greater efficiency and better service quality. Nevertheless, the political debates do not seem to fade away and local politicians still have to decide on privatisation issues. We argue that attitude studies of local politicians are of importance and present a 2014 survey in this regard, using Swedish elderly care as one example. Our findings show that altitudinal difference between left-and right-wing politicians on private for-profit providers remains distinctive. Moreover, political orientations of individuals, political majority in the municipality, as well as privatisation level already achieved locally are identified as important factors in explaining local politicians willingness to privatise further. This case study serves as a good example to examine the market development of public welfare in advanced welfare states and also contributes to the contentious discussion of political roles in welfare reform.

    Abstract [en]

Järtecken: Joen Petri Klint och 1500-talets vidunderliga lutherdom2018Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Oriental Fantasy: A postcolonial discourse analysis of Western belly dancers’ imaginations of Egypt and dance festivals in Egypt2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Belly dance is popularly practised in the West, and every year, thousands of enthusiasts and professionals from around the world travel to attend belly dance festivals in Egypt, which is considered the cultural centre of the dance. This bachelor’s thesis examines the discourses produced by Western or ʽwhiteʼ belly dancers from Sweden and Finland, on the topics of tourism in Egypt and belly dance festivals in Egypt. The texts are analysed using James Paul Gee's discourse analytical framework, combined with postcolonial theory, complemented with an intersectional approach. From the postcolonial and feminist perspectives, belly dance discourse in the West and tourism discourse are problematic, as they perpetuate Orientalist tropes and unequal global power structures, which build on colonial discourse. It is hoped that by identifying and questioning these aspects of discourse that are problematic in terms of equity, this study will make a small contribution towards mitigating its adverse effects, and towards social change.

"Stand with me brothers and sisters": A quantitative content analysis of League of Legends World Championships, based on the theory of brand community.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research was to see at which extent the game League of Legends, during the world championship, could be seen as a brand community.

I have used a quantitative content analysis where the variables that were measured consisted of the elements from the theory of brand community. The elements were (1) consciousness of kind, (2) rituals and traditions, (3) moral responsibility.

I used the following research issues:

    • What physical evidence is there to support that the League of Legends scene is evolving?
    • What qualitative, visual changes have been made over the years (in League of Legends world championship finals)?
    • At what frequency does the elements of Brand Community, as an amount of mentions by the commentators, occur in League of Legends (E-sport, world championship finals)?

My findings suggest that the League of Legends E-sport scene is a brand community that is evolving; according to the set criteria’s for a brand community; and that the world championship can be seen as a brand fest, a gathering of a brand community.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish self-image has been transformed in recent decades from the self-image of a homogeneous country with immigrants to a self-perception of a multicultural society. In this article we investigate how memory institutions contribute to constructing and dissolving the boundaries of the Swedish community by including or excluding immigrants in the constructions of a national self-perception. The ongoing collection “Remembering the Migration” at the Nordic Museum constitutes the empirical case study. The current collection and previous collections of different immigrant narratives at the museum are examples of documentation of subjective experiences and interpretations of the multicultural society in Sweden against a background of increased migration in the postwar period.

Our analysis concludes that the collection, “Remembering the Migration” has an including perspective. There is an outspoken objective to incorporate the immigrants’ stories about migration in the common historiography and the national cultural heritage in multicultural Sweden. However, our study also shows that the questionnaire used in the collection lacks questions about experiences of discrimination or racism and thereby contributes to recreating a tacit narrative about Sweden as an inclusive and non-racist country or nation. This self-perception is also generated at the website of the Museum, where a selection of 17 collected narratives are published. In general none of these stories tell about experiences of racism or discrimination. On the contrary, most narrators in these narratives position themselves as well-included in Swedish society, mostly through their personal efforts of hard work and/or ambitious studies. However, our study indicates that this including, multicultural and non-racist self-perception is questioned and negotiated by some people who submitted their life stories and rather reveals that Sweden is characterized by, and has previously been characterized by, both inclusion and exclusion in relation to migrants. Furthermore our analysis of the published excerpts from the life stories reveals that exclusion could also be experienced from gender and class positions as well as in some cases also on the basis of ethnicity.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Supporting students to master the transition from secondary school to university is a challenge that occupies educators in many countries. In order to support the students in effective ways, we need to know what subject conceptions and subject knowledge they bring to academic studies. In this study, the authors draw on questionnaire data from 462 student teachers in Sweden. The questionnaires were filled in the first week the students studied history at university. Among the students, some trained to be history teachers at primary and elementary school, whereas others trained to be history teachers at secondary school. The results indicate there are both similarities and differences between the student groups. Those training to become history teachers at primary and elementary school identified with the teacher profession but less so with the subject of history. Those studying to become history teachers at secondary school tended to identify with the subject but less so with the teacher profession. Most students argued that history is important in order to understand the present. All student groups manifested knowledge about “time-spaces” of the past, i.e. they were able to show a rough chronological framework. A minority among the students manifested a chaotic chronological order. Among students studying to become teachers at secondary school, there is a tendency that they have weaker knowledge about older history and Nordic history as compared to modern history and Swedish and world history.

Länsstyrelsen och reduktionen: Den östgötska länstyrelsens delaktighet i Karl XI:s reduktion under slutet av 1680-talet2014In: Historia i Linköping / [ed] Erik Peterson, Linköping: Avdelningen för historie-, turism- och medievetenskap , 2014, p. 3-36Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This book is for anyone who is curious about Sweden and would like to know more about its history. The book provides an overview of political, social, economic, and cultural developments from the end of the 10th century up to the 2010s.

The book comprises four chronologically ordered chapters. Each chronological chapter features a portrait of a personage who illustrates the spirit of the times: St. Bridget, Queen Christina, the scientist Carolus Linnaeus, and the politician Olof Palme. Besides the chronological surveys, there are special sections devoted to overarching trends in justice, demographic trends, and the emergence of cities.

Homicide in Scandinavia: Long-term Trends and Their Interpretations2008In: Violence in Europe. Historical and Contemporary Perspectives / [ed] Sophie Body-Gendrot, Pieter Spierenburg, editors, New York: Springer , 2008, 1, p. 41-64Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Has violence changed over the centuries? Has it always held the same meanings for us?Will it always be a given in society?

Taking the sociocultural long view, Violence in Europe analyzes the prevalence and role of violence from street crime to terrorist attacks, homicide to genocide in the evolution of human and national behavior. The editors and 14 colleagues in history, anthropology, sociology, and psychology focus on Northern and Western Europe, examining centuries of violent phenomena, from the cultural logic of the Middle Ages to today s soccer riots and security alerts. The contributors examination of social constructions (honor codes, class and gender roles) and public ambivalence (acceptance, abhorrence, fascination) regarding violence sheds needed light on current dynamics in law enforcement, political systems, and what many have termed 'the civilization of violence.'

Findings from Britain, France, Ireland, Belgium, and Scandinavia explore: The paradoxes of ethnic violence and insider/outsider thinking in an increasingly multicultural world; Trends in interpersonal violence during wartime and peacetime; The gendering of violence, from early French marital laws to London s underground nightlife; The growth of cities: modernization, conflict, aggression; Modern prevention and surveillance strategies: effective solutions, complicating the problem, or some middle ground?

Reflecting innovative methods of research and interpretation, Violence in Europe is thought-provoking and instructive for researchers and students in psychology and criminology. And with the mounting global presence of violence today, this is reading with profound implications for the future.

2017, Stockholm: Historielärarnas förening , 2017, p. 153-173Chapter in book (Other academic)
