HR-strategier för regional tillväxt och samverkan? En studie av två arbetsmarknadsintermediärer2011Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The research in the present study focuses on preliterate people’s ways of modelling and drawing. Our aim is to understand how the participants solve the problem of making three-dimensional sculptures and two-dimensional drawings of themselves or animals in their surroundings. Also, we compare the meanings of the participants’ first-ever drawings, based on one of two ways of starting the activity. The first group was asked to draw a human figure or an animal without first creating a sculpture. The second group was asked to create sculptures before drawing the same motives. We found that both children and adults drew tadpoles. However, single view representations were more common in the group who had only made drawings, while in the sculpture/drawing-group half of the drawings showed more than one view in their representations of human figures. There were examples of culture-specific features with significant recognizable social meanings in both sculptures and drawings. The findings are discussed in terms of socio-cultural theories on the development of imagination and creative combinations in settings where new tools and tasks are at hand

    Abstract [sv]

Conditions for Boundary Crossing: Social Practices of Newly Qualified Swedish Teachers2008In: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, ISSN 0031-3831, E-ISSN 1470-1170, Vol. 52, no 6, p. 643-660Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about conditions for boundary crossing between academic and vocational practices and to identify dimensions of social practice within workplaces. The data consist of 28 questionnaires and 14 in-depth interviews with newly qualified secondary school teachers in their first year of teaching. We use the lens of sociocultural theory to analyse qualitatively what we can learn from newcomers talk about their experiences and whether theories provided during their teacher education helped them to meet challenges in their new workplaces. Theoretically, notions of participation in social practices in terms of social space are in focus. In the findings, such space is identified as social adjustment, social distance, social inclusion and social expansion. Drawing on these concepts, we suggest that professional development depends strongly on the way new teachers boundary crossing is supported by collaboration and to what extent they belong to professional dialogues in settings with inclusive and expansive relationships.

Conceptualising Professional Identification as Flexibility, Stability and Ambivalence2010In: Learning through Practice: Models, Traditions, Orientations and Approaches / [ed] Stephen Billett, Dordrecht: Springer , 2010, p. 120-138Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter discusses physicians’ and engineers’ professional identity formation through engagement in practice. First, the concept of professional identification as the enactment of life politics is advanced. Professional identification is here viewed as an ongoing process in the context of lifelong learning, where learners’ subjectivities and life trajectories are significant. Second, the concepts flexibility, stability and ambivalence are introduced and used dialectically as analytical tools for understanding physicians’ and engineers’ experiences of learning through their different practices. In discussing these concepts, we illustrate the conception of life-politics by means of empirical examples of how subjectivity, everyday life experiences, and conditions in different practices interplay in the process of professional identification. Third, we show how the processes of becoming an engineer or a physician stand as substantially different processes, seemingly more or less articulated and determined. Moreover, being an engineer or physician reflects additional aspects of learning through the process of identification with the professional role, including the impact of the work itself and of the personal self. In all, our findings suggest that the engineers identify with the content and nature of the work itself as a flexible strategy, thereby making the identification with the profession ambivalent. The physicians, on the other hand, seem to build a character as a doctor with which they identify permanently, thereby shaping a fragile boundary between their selves and the profession.  Finally, an interpretive model is proposed, where the life-politics of the individuals is expressed through flexibility, stability, and ambivalence.

On the move: Swedish physicians' experiences of the transition from higher education to working life2003In: Education as a critical force: myth or reality?, Copenhagen: The Danish University of Education , 2003, p. 99-99Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this mainly descriptive study is to sketch out how recently graduated physicians experience the transition from higher education to working life. As a part of a more extensive research project 12 physicians, who had been working for a few months, were interviewed. The physicians were asked to talk about what they perceived as central aspects of their university-education and what they had learned, their experience of the transition and the first encounter with working life. During the qualitative analysis a complex picture of the process has emerged and it is difficult to distinguish any homogeneity in the physicians’ experiences.

New ways of organizing product introductions2012In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 41, p. 4856-4861Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to describe and reflect on an interactive research approach used to address the challenges on how to improve product introductions, the part of the product realization process associated with the transfer of a product from product development to serial production. In the interactive research approach, research results as well as improvement of practice are given equal importance. The collaboration between researchers and practitioners therefore addresses both the focus and the process of the change. The approach includes four main iterative steps: 1) mapping/diagnosis, 2) feedback of results, 3) participation in development activities, and 4) follow-up/evaluation. The paper reports findings from interactive research in one company within office product industry and one company group, consisting of three company units within the engine industry. Preliminary findings indicate that the participating companies afterwards work in a more structured way with product introductions and that the employees have gained deeper knowledge about product introductions as well as experienced the advantages of working across functional boundaries. Furthermore, the interactive research approach is suitable to run projects from an ergonomics perspective as it focuses on developing both practice and theory, it is human-centered, and it emphasizes broad participation from practitioners.

Effekter av kompetensutveckling2010In: Arbetsplatslärande: Att leda och organisera kompetensutveckling, Lund: Studentlitteratur , 2010Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Återgång i arbetet: Rehabiliteringsprocessen i teori och praktik2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    • Åtgärder bör komma igång mycket tidigt i sjukskrivningen.

    Abstract [sv]

Two Types of Learning Environment: Enabling and Constraining A Study of Care Work2008In: Journal of Workplace Learning, ISSN 1366-5626, E-ISSN 1758-7859, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 84-97Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: First, to elaborate on the notion of a learning environment based on an empirical study of care work. Second, to explore how aspects of a learning environment may differ between and within units in the same organization, and how to understand and explain such differences.

Methodology/approach: The study was based on a multiple case-study design including four departments within two care units. Data were collected through direct observation of working conditions and work practices as well as semi-structured interviews with all care-workers within the two units (29 persons), and with the head and deputy head for each of the two units.

Findings: It was possible to distinguish between two qualitatively different patterns of working conditions and practices within the four teams. These patterns of practice were interpreted as representing an enabling and a constraining type of learning environment as these concepts were defined in this study. The evidence suggest that the emergence of an enabling learning environment was an outcome of a dynamic interplay between a number of factors that had the character of a virtuous circle.

Originality/value: The article adds to previous research through a distinction between two types of learning environment (enabling and constraining), and by linking these two types of learning environment to different conceptions of learning and to different working conditions and practices.

Användning och nytta av utvärderingar: ett lärandeperspektiv2009In: Lärande utvärdering / [ed] Svensson, L., Brulin, G., Jansson, S. & Sjöberg, K. (red.), Lund: Studentlitteratur , 2009, 1:1, p. 103-129Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Informal Learning at Work: Conditions, Processes and Logics2011In: The SAGE Handbook of Workplace Learning / [ed] M. Malloch, L. Cairns, K. Evans & B.N. O'Connor (Eds.), London, UK: SAGE Publications Ltd , 2011, p. 105-119Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This Handbook provides a state-of-the art overview of the field of workplace learning from a global perspective. The authors are all well-placed theoreticians, researchers, and practitioners in this burgeoning field, which cuts across higher education, vocational education and training, post-compulsory secondary schooling, and lifelong education. The volume provides a broad-based, yet incisive analysis of the range of theory, research, and practical developments in workplace learning.

The editors draw together the three essential areas of Theory; Research and Practice; and Issues and Futures in the field of Workplace Learning. In addition, final chapters include recommendations for further development.

Key researchers and writers in the field have approached workplaces as the base of learning about work, that is, work-based learning. There has also been emerging interest in variations of this idea such as learning about, through, and at work. Many of the theoretical discussions have centred on adult learning and some on learners managing their own learning, with emphasis on aspects such as communities of practice and self directed learning.

In Europe and Australia, early work in the field was often linked to the Vocational Education and Training (VET) traditions with concerns around skills, competencies and 'on the job' learning. The idea that learning and workplaces had more to do with real lifelong and lifewide aspects than traditional "training" regimens has emerged in the last decade. Since the mid 1990s, the field has grown world-wide as an area of theory, research, and practical work that has not only expanded the interest but has also legitimized the area as a field of study, reflection, and progress.

The SAGE Handbook of Workplace Learning draws together a wide range of views, theoretical dispositions, and assertions and provides a leading-edge presentation by key writers and researchers with insight into the field and its current state.  It is a resource for researchers and academics interested in the scope and breadth of Workplace Learning..

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The field of education has experienced extraordinary technological, societal and institutional change in recent years, making it one of the most fascinating yet complex fields of study in social science. Unequalled in its combination of authoritative scholarship and comprehensive coverage, International Encyclopedia of Education 3rd edition succeeds two highly successful previous editions (1985, 1994) in aiming to encapsulate research in this vibrant field for the twenty-first century reader. Under development for five years, this work encompasses over 1,350 articles across 24 individual areas of coverage, and is expected to become the dominant resource in the field. Education is a multidisciplinary and international field drawing on a wide range of social sciences and humanities disciplines and IEE3 comprehensively matches this diversity. The diverse background and multi-disciplinary subject coverage of the Editorial Board ensure that a balanced and objective academic framework was achieved. Working relationships with relevant international organizations provide have lent this project the requisite global outlook. The 1100 contributors represent over 100 countries, capturing a complete portrait of this evolving field.* A totally new work, revamped with a wholly new editorial board, structure and brand-new list of meta-sections and articles * Developed by an international panel of editors and authors drawn from senior academia * Web-enhanced with supplementary multimedia audio and video files, hotlinked to relevant references and sources for further study

    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the idea of practice-based innovation and to propose a framework that can be used to conceptualize and analyze practice-based innovation processes in organizations.

Design/methodology/approach – The argument is driven by conceptual analysis and theoretical synthesis based on theory and research on innovation, organizational change, individual and organizational learning.

Findings – The proposed framework portrays practice-based innovation as a cyclical process of adaptive and developmental learning driven by contradictions and tensions between explicit and implicit dimensions of work processes.

Originality/value – The paper adds to previous research through its focus on practice-based innovation and the conceptualization of this notion in terms of learning in and through everyday work. It thus creates connections between innovation research and research on workplace learning.

Praktikbaserade innovationsprocesser i kommunal verksamhet.2006In: Kommunledning och samhällsutveckling / [ed] Lars Ingelstam, Per-Erik Ellström, Sven-Inge Arnell, Lund: Studentlitteratur , 2006, p. 227-256Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

This book is an accessible entry point into the theory and practice of work reflection for students and practitioners. Taking a cross-disciplinary approach, it covers management, education, organizational psychology and sociology, drawing on examples from Europe, the Middle East, North America and Australia.    It traces reflection at work from an emphasis on training, through a focus on how organizations learn, to a concern with the necessary learning groups to operate effectively. It emphasizes productivity combined with satisfying lived experience of work life and points the way to a new collective focus on learning at work.

The use and benefits of evalutions: a learning perspective2009In: Learning through ongoing evaluation / [ed] Svensson, L., Brulin, G., Jansson, S. & Sjöberg, K. (Eds.), Lund: Studentlitteratur , 2009, 1:1, p. 107-132Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book presents a relatively new perspective of learning evaluation in interactive forms. The question is how long-term effects can be achieved, i.e. a sustainable development with the aid of projects. This is an important question, particularly in the context of EU Structural Funds. In the book learning evaluation concepts are grounded in theory. The majority of chapters also include practical examples of learning evaluation and discuss these in some depth. Important aspects of the evaluation process include the researcher?s or evaluator?s constructive dialogue with the participants, the importance of critical examination, and that approaches shift between proximity and distance. Common knowledge formation is important in a learning evaluation and analysis seminars are presented as a way of achieving this. The book?s target groups include university students in the fields of sociology, education, business economics and management and human resources management. The book could also be used in university courses and in-service training for managers, developers, consultants, project managers and evaluators.

    Abstract [sv]

Two Logics of Learning2006In: Learning, Working and Living. Mapping the Terrain of Working Life / [ed] Antonacopoulou, E., Jarvis, P., Andersen, V., Elkjaer & Hoyrup, S. (Eds.), London: Palgrave Macmillan , 2006, p. 33-49Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Debate about organization and workplace learning has now moved on from viewing learning as a way of fostering control. This book suggests that by focusing on learning as a way of living, the needs of production can be reconciled with the need for employees to have satisfying engagement with their work
