    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to present and discuss the Kansei engineering (KE) methodology, and to reflect on the future development of KE. The paper presents a model of the KE methodology and illustrates how this model was applied on a simple example which all may understand – design of a new chocolate bar.

    Design/methodology/approach – The research methodology is a combination of desk research (literature analysis), data collection, data analysis, reflections and model building.

    Findings – The paper suggests a structural model as a possible expanded framework for future Kansei/affective engineering research studies. According to the model profound affection is a result of the following six enabler factors: sensing experience; emotional experiences (Kansei); behavioural experiences/action; social experiences/interactions and relations; spiritual experiences/moral, ethics; intellectual experiences/cognition.

    Originality/value – The paper defines “Profound affection” as a very comprehensive state, which is a result of a combination of sensing, intellectual/cognitive, emotional, social, behavioural and spiritual experiences. “Profound affection” is not only a result of sensing or emotional experiences.

    Abstract [en]

    Evaluations of products based on visual stimuli are at the same time both subjective and important. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the visual properties of wood flooring and peoples reactions to computer visualization of interior wood products. The research strategy involved showing digital pictures of the same room, but with different wood floorings. The impressions of potential consumers were measured by means of rating scales for each descriptive word. This was done using the method of Kansei engineering, in which statistical connections between properties and semantics (descriptions) were analyzed. The research presented here contributes to theory and practice in two important ways. First and most important, the study shows that the chosen method is suitable for measuring peoples preferences on visualizations of interior wood. Second, the results indicate that certain properties are important for a floor to be judged as "good-looking" and others for a floor to be deemed "modern" or "vivid."

    Abstract [en]

    Tendencies in product development of today make it likely that many future products will be functional equivalent and therefore hard to distinguish between for the customer. Customers will decide by highly subjective criteria which product to purchase. One task for product development in this context is to be able to capture the customer’s considerations and feelings of products and translate these emotional aspects into concrete product design.

    Today a number of different methods, such as Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Semantical Environment Description (SMB), Conjoint Analysis and Kansei Engineering exist and are used in practical applications.

    The purpose of this thesis is to understand and apply Kansei Engineering methodology and explore ways to integrate the methodology into an industrial product development process.

    This was done by conducting a study on forklift trucks in different European countries and business areas and by exploring ways of integrating Kansei Engineering in product development processes.

    The number of Kansei words collected was reduced based on the result of a pilot study using a combination of different tools. A computerized data collection method was used in combination with a modified VAS-scale in order to reduce the time for filling out the evaluation forms The results of the study in the visited Northern and Middle European companies make it evident that Kansei Engineering has to be adapted in several aspects to the circumstances in each situation. The data showed that there are differences in attitude towards reach trucks in the different European countries. These results were used in order to adapt the product requirements for each specific country. Starting at Cooper’s stage gate model Kansei Engineering was applied on a macro level, a micro level and for verifying purpose. Using QFD, Kansei Engineering helps to identify customer needs their importance and the technical responses as well as to conduct benchmarking and to connect the customer needs mathematically to the technical responses.

    This study of Kansei Engineering revealed that there was no general model on the methodology available in English literature. Outgoing from a previous flowchart, a conceptual framework of Kansei Engineering was developed integrating the existing Kansei Engineering Types and future tools.

    Abstract [en]

    Improvements in the design of products for industrial use gets increasingly important. The aim is to get better knowledge about the user’s feelings about warehouse-trucks and to test study methods . Kansei Engineering is used in order to compare three trucks from different manufacturers and reveal differences in impact on the users. The project contains three studies at European companies, using a modified analogue-visual scale, administered by Excel based software. The results show that there are significant differences between truck traits. All trucks score lower than an "ideal" truck. This shows that even a mature product still has improvement potential.

Customers will, therefore, base their decisions on more subjective factors. Moreover, in the future, products will consist, to a higher grade, of a combination of a tangible and intangible part. Kansei Engineering is a tool translating customer's feelings into concrete product parameters and provides support for future product design. Presently, a total of six different types of Kansei Engineering are in use. The aim of this paper is to propose a framework in Kansei Engineering to facilitate the understanding of the different types of Kansei Engineering and to open Kansei Engineering for the integration of new tools. The new structure includes the choice of a product domain, which can be described from a physical and a semantic perspective as building a vector space in each. For the latter mentioned space, the Semantic Differential Method is used. In the next step, the two spaces are merged and a prediction model is built, connecting the Semantic Space and the Space of Product Properties together. The resulting prediction model has to be validated using different types of post-hoc tests.

    Engineering Emotional Values in Product Design: Kansei Engineering in Development2005Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Feelings and impressions of a product are important for the decision of purchasing it or not. Designing attractive products therefore requires knowledge about the feelings and impressions the products evoke on the customer and the user. Integrating such affective values in product design requires the introduction of suitable methods into companies’ product design processes, methods which can capture and convert subjective and even unconscious feelings about a product into concrete design parameters. This is sometimes referred to as ‘Affective Engineering’. One methodology in this context is Kansei Engineering, which has been developed in Japan in order to design feelings into products. The aim of this thesis was twofold: Firstly, to improve understanding of the nature of products making emotional impact on the users and customers. Secondly, to identify and improve methods capable of grasping those affective values and translating them into concrete product design solutions. This thesis presents three empirical studies and two methodological papers, relating to warehouse trucks and laminate flooring. The first study was made on user impact of warehouse trucks in three different European countries. A second study dealt with affective values of rocker-switches in work vehicles, such as warehouse trucks. A third study on this truck type compared the old manoeuvring panel evaluated in the previous studies with a newly introduced manoeuvring panel in order to validate the impact of the design improvements made after the first study. Further, a conceptual model on Kansei Engineering methodology was proposed in a methods paper based on the experience from the studies performed in order to provide a structure for performing Kansei Engineering studies. The fifth paper had the purpose of validating and improving the proposed model using laminate flooring as research object. More structured ways of identifying design parameters and relevant product properties was given high priority in the improvement work of the methodology. A model for spanning the Space of Product Properties was presented and applied. This thesis also deals with other improvement areas in the methodology and proposed new developments, including the use of scales, experimental design and validation methods. In conclusion, Kansei Engineering is a concept and a methodology in strong development, a framework in which tools and methods are continuously developed, added and integrated.

    Rocker switches used in vehicles meet high demands partly due to the increased focus on customer satisfaction. Previous studies focused on ergonomics and usability rather than design for emotions and affection. The aim of this study was to determine how and to what extent engineering properties influence the perception of rocker switches. Secondary aims were to compare two types of rating scales and to determine consistency over time of the ratings. As a method Kansei Engineering was used, describing a product domain from a physical and semantic point of view. A model was built and validated, and recommendations for new designs were given. It was seen that the subjective impressions of robustness, precision and design are strongly influenced by the zero position, the contact position, the form-ratio, shape and the surface of rocker switches. A 7-point scale was found suitable. The Kansei ratings were consistent over time.

    The Scandinavian confectionery market is dominated by three major manufacturers, of whom two are affiliates of international conglomerates and one is a domestic producer. The aim of this study was to map the affective impression of chocolate bars’ exterior and interior and give suggestions for a coherent design. Kansei Engineering was used for this. Products were rated on AVI scales with relevant Kansei words, resulting in affective profile graphs. These data were processed treated using Factor Analysis. Four factors were retrieved: Attraction, Life-Style, Familiarity and Snack. Multiple Regression Analysis and Rough Set Analysis were applied to map relationships between physical attributes and affective values. Attributes with significant affective impact are size, shape, color: and brand (packaging) and Surface roughness, Separation and top- and side-angles (shape). The data were used for successful product development and a product series with coherent attributes was developed. One product is used to illustrate the process. Kansei Engineering proved to be suitable for this task although the results may be biased since the evaluation is based on visual impression only.

    Launching products successfully onto today’s markets requires not only good quality and usability for a reasonable price but also that the customer gets a good subjective impression of the product. This is especially true for mature products, which tend to be rather similar to competing products. Designing a good feeling into products is a challenge many companies face today. A new research field is named emotional design or affective engineering. One method within this field is Kansei Engineering, a methodology that can quantify user impressions mathematically. A general procedure for conducting Kansei Engineering studies has been proposed, but still much expert knowledge is necessary for those studies. Therefore, software tools facilitating this process have been developed. In this paper, two tools used at Linköping University are presented. It can be seen that those tools deliver good results and remove many obstacles for applying Kansei Engineering in companies. However, more research is needed on the theoretical bases and extraction methods.

As a method Kansei Engineering was used, describing a product domain from a physical and semantic point of view. A model was built and validated, and recommendations for new designs were given. It was seen that the subjective impressions of robustness, precision and design are strongly influenced by the zero position, the contact position, the form-ratio, shape and the surface of rocker switches. A 7-point scale was found suitable. The Kansei ratings were consistent over time.

    Kansei or Affective Engineering is a relatively new research field in the West.Linköping University in Sweden has been pioneering research and applicationwithin Kansei Engineering since 1999. Several companies have cooperated indifferent Kansei studies, for example Toyota/BT, Volvo, Saab, Scania. In some of theearly studies, there were difficulties to apply the methodology. Reasons for thisincluded shortage of competence within affective design in European organizations,but also the fact that incitements for improvement of product design seemed to belacking. One of the problems applying the methodology was that Europeanparticipants in the studies did not accept to make a vast number of ratings duringlong time periods. Japanese researchers used 5-point semantic differentialquestionnaires and up to 300 rating-scales per participant and product. In order toovercome this problem, a modification of the rating scales was developed. Hence,data reduction methods such as factor analysis, affinity diagram and Pareto chartswere tested and validated in order to reduce the number of Kansei words andproduct samples used, without compromising the validity of the result. Thisapproach eventually resulted in the development of a universal Kansei EngineeringSoftware (KESo) which reduces the time needed for each Kansei Engineering study.Another objective for our research has been to develop and validate methods forincomplete data collection, i.e. a prioritization of product attributes. Another resultfrom the cooperation with industrial companies is that the companies stronglyemphasised that product development studies need to be less time and resourceconsuming.Keywords:

    Trends in product development today indicate that customers will find it hard to distinguish between many products due to functional equivalency. Customers will, therefore, base their decisions on more subjective factors. Moreover, in the future, products will consist, to a higher grade, of a combination of a tangible and intangible part. Kansei Engineering is a tool translating customer's feelings into concrete product parameters and provides support for future product design. Presently, a total of six different types of Kansei Engineering are in use. The aim of this paper is to propose a framework in Kansei Engineering to facilitate the understanding of the different types of Kansei Engineering and to open Kansei Engineering for the integration of new tools. The new structure includes the choice of a product domain, which can be described from a physical and a semantic perspective as building a vector space in each. For the latter mentioned space, the Semantic Differential Method is used. In the next step, the two spaces are merged and a prediction model is built, connecting the Semantic Space and the Space of Product Properties together. The resulting prediction model has to be validated using different types of post-hoc tests.

In contrast to other books, the present book takes a very broad, possibly all-inclusive perspective, on how people experience products. It thereby bridges gaps between several areas within psychology (e.g. perception, cognition, emotion) and links these areas to more applied areas of science, such as product design, human-computer interaction and marketing.The field of product experience research will include some of the research from four areas: Arts, Ergonomics, Technology, and Marketing.
