    Abstract [sv]

Young drivers: Reduced crash risk with passengers in the vehicle2008In: Accident Analysis and Prevention, ISSN 0001-4575, E-ISSN 1879-2057, Vol. 40, no 1, p. 341-348Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Studies have shown that the effect of passengers on accident propensity among young drivers is ambiguous—in some cases positive and some negative. In Sweden, various kinds of information are compiled in registers, including a national accident database and exposure data collected in a national investigation of the driving habits of license holders. Access to such data offers a good opportunity to study crash risks related to driving with and without passengers. This was done for drivers in three different age groups (18–24, 25–64 and >65 years) accompanied by one, two or three or more passengers. Differences in crash risk were estimated using incidence density ratios (IDRs) and 95% confidence intervals. The results show that passengers had an overall protective effect, that is, the crash risk was higher for those who drove alone, regardless of their age or gender. This protective effect increased with every extra passenger (up to eight), indicating that the more passengers in the vehicle, the safer the driving. The influence of passengers was weakest (albeit still positive) among the youngest drivers (ages 18–24 years), especially the males in that group. The protective impact showed the same pattern on all days of the week, but was most marked from Friday to Sunday for most of the drivers, regardless of age.

Arbete och kommunikation i arbetslag och arbetsenheter1990Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In many schools in Sweden, so-called teacher teams work together and meet regularly to discuss their common problems and interests. Work and communication in teacher teams is a study of teachers' cooperation in such permanent working groups in relation to organizational context.

A model characterizing the organizational context of teacher teams is presented. This model pertains to two aspects of school organization; degree of hierarchy and degree of tightness. A classification of the examined schools was possible by this model.

The report demonstrates both how the items on the agenda and the handling of tasks in the different team meetings are highly influenced by the organizational context of the school.

The second part of the study concerns the interactional dynamics in the meetings. The interaction is analyzed and described as a communication game. The different components and the "rules" of this communicatlon game are distinguished as well as the roles of the different participants and especially the distinctive features of leadership.

Arbetsformer och dynamik i klassrummet.2003In: Kobran, nallen och majjen: tradition och förnyelse i svensk skola och skolforskning / [ed] Staffan Selander, Stockholm: Myndigheten för skolutveckling , 2003, p. 223-243Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Cheering as an indicator of social identity and self-regulation in Swedish ice hockey supporter groups2012In: International Review for the Sociology of Sport, ISSN 1012-6902, E-ISSN 1461-7218, Vol. 47, no 2, p. 133-148Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore whether cheering could be a sign of the social identity of a supporter group, and further to investigate if cheers could serve a self-policing purpose. The matches included in this study were classified as high risk matches. The observational data made it possible to construct a taxonomy of cheering based on the implicit meaning of the cheers. The observations proved that cheerleaders were able to break off aggressive and violent tendencies by introducing supportive cheers and thus enhancing a peaceful social identity among the supporters. In contrast to the Emergent Norm Theory (Turner and Killian, 1972, 1993), that states that group processes emerge without prior coordination and planning, this study demonstrates that collective actions can be influenced and controlled by the cheerleaders. The results indicate that self-policing seems to be more efficient, in order to secure order, than policing by force. The originality of this research is not primarily the taxonomy of cheers, although being an innovation, but the evidence for planned synchronicity and coordination as tools for breaking destructive collective actions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study shows that there is an intensive verbal and non-verbal communication among students <luring ordinary lessons in the comprehensiveschool. This private communication takes part irrespective of (and in spite of) the teacher's educative efforts. The results suggest that the hidden pattem in this interaction is such that some students dominate (and learn to dominate) their classmates, whereas other pupils subordinate themselves and are trained to be underdogs.

The results also indicate that there are different signals of dominance in temporary groups compared to permanent groups. In the former, the leader usurps power, whereas in the latter he maintains power.

Leadership and followership tend to show different verbal and non-verbal signals depending on the emotional state of mind in the group. This result indicates that there are no general signals of dominance among informal teen-age leaders.

As leadership depends on the permanence and the emotional state of the group, there is a great risk for an uninitiated observer to designate an ordinary member as the leader. Such a judgement is based on sterotyped conceptions rather than on actual patterns of leader behaviour.

In conclusion, the leadership in a teenage group is constituted by the followers as well as by the leader himself. The followers encourage and permit certain leader behaviour, thereby limiting the behaviour of the leader, but simultaneously opening opportunities for alternative behaviours.

Dynamics in meetings: on leadership and followership in ordinary meetings in different organizations1986Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A method for analyzing interactional dynamics in regular meetings and sessions was developed on the basis of Bion's (1961) basic-assumption model. This model postulates that members in groups frequently take part in collective defence activities which prevent the group from carrying out the tasks assigned to them. According to Bion, this is an instinctive, instantaneous process which will inevitably occur when the task is too demanding or the participants' integrity is threatened. Such common and shared group movements or basic-assumption modes are looked upon as collective regressive processes based on tacit assumptions in the group. The processes are spontaneous and outside human control. Basic-assumption modes may be of four different kinds: dependence, flight, fight or pairing. These concepts are elaborated, operationalized and adapted to an empirical study comprising nine schools and two companies. Three regular meetingsin cach organization were observed by a non-involved observer and the interaction in the meetings was recorded by means of shorthand notes.

The results provide evidence for a conditional relationship between the interactional dynamics in meetings and organizational frame factors. Theoretical and practical consequences of these results are discusscd. The combination of, and oscillation betwecn, basic-assumption modes seem to be governed by behavioural patterns established in early infancy. The resumption of these patterns is unconscious but seems to be influenced by organizational factors in a systematic way. The processes also appear to be more affected by the group as a whole than by the formal leader. Therefore, leadership seems to be a process in which the group as a whole is invalved rather than just the leader.

The results indicate that there is no simple way to change or develop leadership in an organization. The search for appropriate "leader traits" or for "ideal management behaviour" seems to be impromising. However, greater knowledge, and experience of group processes occurring in regular meetings in ordinary organizations would provide leaders and followers alike with new insights into, and be a means of increasing shared responsibility for, the conditions of leadership.

Dynamik i arbetsgrupper : om grupprocesser på arbetet2006Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Forskning om lärares arbete i klassrummet2007Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Group phenomena and classroom management2005In: Handbook for Classroom Management:: Research, Practice, and Contemporary Issues / [ed] Carolyn M. Evertson, Carol S. Weinstein, New York: Erlbaum , 2005, p. 1141-1160Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Classroom management is a topic of enduring concern for teachers, administrators, and the public. It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes:*First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management.*Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum.*Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior.*Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness.Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.

Ögren, Lund: Studentlitteratur, 2010, p. 89-108Chapter in book (Other academic)
