    Abstract [en]

    This study focuses on the discourse of an intercontinental on-line Master's programme in adult learning, using English as the lingua franca of the programme and involving four collaborating universities in Sweden, South Africa, Canada and Australia. The programme is highly interactive, emphasising communication between students. Taking the variation in participation as the point of departure, a discourse analysis aiming at analysing the contingencies contributing to the pattern of communication in the programme was undertaken. Data consist of a variety of texts on-line web-documents, written notes, and narratives that participants wrote about their lives related to participation in the programme. The use of English as the lingua franca contributed to a mistake anxiety, which for some students was hampering their communication in the programme. Aspects of the material world such as the vast differences in the efforts and costs for participating in the programme were also highly interrelated to the shaping of socio-culturally situated identities among the students and thereby contributing to the variation in frequency in participation. The results show that the official discourse of the programme as a text, with its emphasis on equity, change and development, gets subordinated to the discourses produced and reproduced by the students in the programme as a discursive practice and social practice. The students' accounts reveal that there are fragments of an alternative discourse emerging, based on mutual concern and friendship, which might suggest a potential for changing the communicative patterns in the programme.

    Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité were the symbolic words and shouts of millions and millions hopes in the mouths of millions and millions people all around the world in the 18th and 19th century. Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité are still the symbols of democracy during the 20th and 21st century. These wishful words have not lost their meaning during the centuries, although they historically represent the birth of the modern world and reflect the thoughts of enlightenment already in the 18th century. They were realized in the French revolution and the tricolor flag. The Nordic countries have taken seriously the whispers of the enlightenment. They have transferred the words into the field of education. In the name of enlightenment Nordic countries were among the first to develop a wide adult education system in order to cultivate their adult population. They believed, that it is education which gives the people the liberty, equality and fraternity. The very core of the idea of the Nordic welfare state is educational equality as the spearhead to the social equality of the whole nation. In this book we reflect together the state of the art of adult education research in the Nordic countries in the beginning of the third millenium. What is left of the historical tradition of enlightenment and the hopes of the people? Has there been a change in the politics of Nordic adult education research towards the neo-liberalism? What are the challenges of today and how they may be answered? What has the Nordic adult education research to offer to the wider audience of the globalising world? Some answers to these questions are suggested in this book. The answers are presented by the most eminent as well as by junior researchers within the field in Nordic adult education research.     The article reflects on the construction of a common Master's programme across four universities located on four continents, in order to explore the role of networks in international educational collaboration. The study draws on the documented processes of the principal members of the programme team. It is presented as a case study of the development of the programme that uses ideas drawn from actor-network theory to draw attention to the conjunction of human and non-human actors that shaped the resulting web-based courses. Constraints arising from major institutional and systemic obstacles were addressed through the effects of the actor-network. The reciprocity of action and de-centring of individual activity made possible through the collaboration enabled the human actors to sustain a level of innovation within their own institutions that would not have been possible through them acting alone.

Via ett anslag från Vetenskapsrådets Utbildningsvetenskapliga kommitté har vi kunnat samlas kring ett gemensamt tema, som vi valt att kalla mobiliseringsdidaktik. Begreppet är knappast etablerat, men vi har funnit att didaktikens frågor kan vara fruktbara även i ett sådant här sammanhang - den slags folkbildning, som siktar på samhällsförändring. Projektet utgör även ett försök att se didaktiska val som dilemman. Boken har tagit formen av en antologi, där varje författare svarar för de empiriska fall som de studerat och de begreppsliga resonemang, som präglat deras perspektiv. På så sätt uppstår en variation i tänkande inom ramen för det gemensamma: didaktik, design och dilemma.

    A common way of discussing generalisation is to search for one conception - a monist view. Another approach is to create a dichotomy between quantitative and qualitative research, each having a single definition - a dualist perspective. A pluralist view is argued for here, i.e. the existence of several lines of reasoning, each of which can be evaluated in specific cases in terms of usefulness, strengths and weaknesses. Five different lines of reasoning about generalization, which could possibly be useful in qualitative research, are presented. They are: 'studies that undermine established universal “truths”', 'the ideographic study', 'enhancing the generalisation potential by maximizing variation', 'generalisation through context similarity' and 'generalisation through recognition of patterns.' Each is critically commented on.

    The Humboltian image of an independent academic is challenged by the recent developments in the governance of universities. Digital technology has produced new tools for the surveillance and steering of researchers’ work. Researchers become actors in an economy based on the disembedded symbolic tokens of publications and citations. Incentives are produced, which make researchers subservient to the steering system. Bibliometrics offers the technology, which is used. The general idea has its worldly application, which is forming the rules for what is supposed to count as academic knowledge, i.e. a priviledged form of knowledge in society generally. Educational research is in this essay used as an example, where some possible implications is projected.
