    Abstract [en]

This report is part of a research project called Integration of knowledge and interprofessional learning. Multiprofessional collaboration and negotiation of meaning in relation to student health. Multiprofessional teams have a long history in Swedish schools but recently a new type of multiprofessional teams was proposed by the Swedish Government integrating health services, psychosocial services with special education. The aim of the study presented in this report was to explore and create understanding about professionals conceptions about how students with problems are handled within in the student health teams. Thirteen focus groups were conducted and

data was analysed with a qualitatively approach. The main findings in this study indicate that problems with a specific student become a case within student health teams. This change from problem to a case is formed in a stair case. The results also indicate that work on cases in the student health can be described in two different dimensions. Based on the first dimension, case management could be considered as based on whether it occurs on a formal or informal way. The second dimension describes whether the efforts made by school health personnel can be seen as direct or indirect.

Konflikter mellan grupper: teorier om intergruppskonflikter1996Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this report is to present and discuss different theories about intergroup conflicts.  By  way  of  introduction  some  concepts  are  discussed  and  explored; intergroup behaviour and relations, interpersonal relations, intergroup relations and boundaries.  Further,  how  conflicts  between  groups  arise  are  explored.  Different theories trying to explain intergroup conflicts are presented and discussed.

A conclusion in the report is that most of the theories explaining intergroup conflicts are  based  on  individual psychology theories.  The  extent to  what  these  different theories can explain intergroup conflicts differs. An extension of group theories ought be a better way to explain this area.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate classroom interaction. Of central importance are the following questions; Does gender of pupil, gender of teacher, age of pupils, subject taught and class size have any importance for the classroom interaction? What conceptions of interaction with pupils do teachers have?

Data have been collected by two different methods – structured classroom observations and focus groups.

The results from the observations study disclose that the gender of the teacher as well as the gender of the pupil has an impact on classroom interaction. The interaction also differs regarding the pupil’s age. The variables pupil gender, teacher gender and pupil’s age together gives an opposite pattern of interaction. Female teachers interact to the same extent with boys and girls when they are young (lower level). When pupils grow older (intermediate and upper levels) they interact more with boys than girls. The pattern of interaction for male teachers goes in the opposite direction. When the pupils are young, they interact more with boys compared to girls. The same pattern is true at the intermediate level. At the upper level male teachers interact to the same extent with boys and girls. School subject and class size proved to have a limited impact on classroom interaction.

Through categorization of data collected in focus groups, eight different themes were identified. These describe teachers’ conceptions of their interaction with pupils. The themes were large classes, catch individual pupils, boys dominate the classroom on expense of girls, pupils’ needs of interaction with adults, the joy of interacting with pupils, do we use the same language, conflicts between pupils, and to meet pupils with another cultural background.

The results from the observations and the focus groups have shown, to some extent different but all-important aspects of classroom interaction. In this thesis two phenomena or questions have been of central importance – gender differences and class size.

Gruppobservationer : teori och praktik2002 (ed. 2)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Is the Grass Greener in the Other Group? Students’ Experiences of Group-Work2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Group-work is used as one type of working method in higher education in Sweden today. Working with others in a group project may have many advantages and may also facilitate learning. But group-work has never been able to work its magic for everyone. Some students find group-based working methods as a high-quality and enjoyable way to learn whereas other find working in group as a waste of time, or even pointless. Sometimes group-members may think and speak about other groups, the processes and the work of the other groups. Students may compare their own group to other groups in their course. As teachers we receive spontaneous comments about how students experience the group-work. Through course evaluations we also have the opportunity to receive annotations about how students consider group-work as working method. Even though a large number of studies have been presented on group-work very little attention has been paid to the students’ experience of the working method. Do students appreciate group projects or do they find it boring and even as a waste of time? Would some students rather prefer to work alone, or in “the other group”?

The aim of this paper presentation is to address students’ experiences of group-work as a working method in higher education. We want to focus on and elucidate the students’ point of view and how they assess working in groups.

Data was collected via structured questionnaire with multiple choice and open ended questions. The questionnaire was distributed to students on different study programmes.

This study is part of a lager research project on group-work at higher education and we will present some of the results from the questionnaire. In the presentation we will focus on students’ positive and negative experiences of group-work. We will also focus on their conceptions of how their own group works compared to other groups in their study program.

    Abstract [en]

A theoretical model for group observation.2008In: The British Psychological Society Annual Conference and BPS Social PsychologySection Conference Dublin 2-4 April.,2008, 2008Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this report is to present an overview of scientific modes of observing, concerning theory as well as practice. By using a theoretical model, based upon factors influencing the choice of observation methods, we describe the field. The model is composed of two dimensions; the first concerns theory-testing versus theory-building while the second dimension describes the level of structure in data collection. The model illustrates a typology of four different approaches of group observations. Further, the role of the observer, reliability, validity and ethical considerations in observational research are discussed.
