Att leva och läsa Bibeln: Textpraktiker i två kristna församlingar1992Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on two years of participant observation in two Christian congregations in a Swedish town. The Book-congregation represents the core of Swedish Free Churches (baptism), the Life-congregation (faith community) belongs to a movement inspired by North American Fundamentalism. During the 1980s, a cult controversy has emerged in Sweden, concerning the legitimacy of the new congregations, to which the latter belongs. "Ways of taking" from the Bible, that haveimportance for ideologizing processes, is part of the agenda of the controversy.

The aim of the thesis is to Study the ethnography of Bible reading, is similar to that in other studies within ethnography and sociology of culture, aiming at exploring the "ideological" and sociocultural embeddedness of communication. Other analytical concepts used, such as interpretive communities, strategies and narratives, are derived from literary theory and reception analysis.

Analyzing Bible reading from this perspective leads to a rich portrayal of the literacy practices of the members. Various literacy events in the communicative economy are highlighted, including interviews, Bible classes, healing classes and the members reading of certain texts from the New Testament (chapters 3-6). This leads to the decentering ofthe notion of "interpretation", which has been the major· focus in previous studies. The keywords of living and reading the Bible are illustrative of the literacy practices in the congregations.

The literacy practices are discussed in relation to the members attitudes towards society and modernity. The poetics and politics of Bible reading involve different conceptions of the role of the Bible in contemporary moral discourse; as a "tool" or as a "weapon" in the competition for cultural legitimacy. Throughout the thesis, the practice of re-presentationin science and religion is discussed. It is argued that methodological reflexivity facilitates an understanding of modern and anti-modern communicative cultures as realities lived.

Fem essäer om rätt och kommunikation2011 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Makten över Folkvettet: Skeptiker i svensk offentlighet2011Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The mission of the world wide movement of skeptics is to combat pseudo science. Skeptics in Sweden are organized in the association Vetenskap och Folkbildning (Eng. Science and Popular Education) and around the journal Folkvett (Eng. Popular Wisdom). The active members of the organization intervene in the public sphere through revealing and ”debunking” claims to scientificness that do not match the standards of scientific epistemology and methods set up by the organization. These revelations are often pronounced in dramatic and moralizing terms where distinctions are made between science that is good or bad, true or false. The revelations and debunkings are made with the motivation that they perform an important function in order to maintain belief and legitimacy in science and democracy. The organization has received ideological support both from the scientific community and from the media. In this study skeptics in Swedish society are focused in order to understand their conceptions of science and of science communication. Analytical focus is on their epistemology, their methods for revealing and debunking pseudo science, and the narrative structure that such revelations are following. Furthermore, focus is also on their conceptions of the public and of the public sphere. This critical study is grounded in science communication and science and technology studies. The critique is that skeptics are monopolizing science as well as popular education and that they thereby show intolerance for varieties and differences in both these realms. They are also criticized for assuming a role of acting as the epistemological police unit in the public sphere.

On communication 5 / Om kommunikation 5: Discourse in professional and everyday culture : selected papers from a seminar arranged by the Department of Communication Studies, on 30-31 May, 19881989Conference proceedings (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The papers deal in different ways with communication in institutional contexts. Two of the contributions are concerned with doctor-patient dialogues focussing, in the first instance of genetic counselling, on the use of incomplete speech and coping with emotions. In the second instance cases of discretion in psychiatric intake-interviews from the side of the doctor are understood as a phenomena where the paradoxical meaning structure of psychiatry is reproduced. The third paper on news interview interaction aims to see similarities and diff erences from "ordinary" conversation.

    Abstract [sv]

The Contents and Organization fo Cross Boundary Learning: Main Findings2011Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Boundary crossing in undergraduate and graduate learning environments is still a relatively unstudied phenomenon, at least in comparison with the attention given to studies of interdisciplinary research. The research reported here focuses on learning environments in the context of Swedish higher education and is based on interviews and fieldwork at two interdisciplinary programs at two universities. The main findings are summarized in twelve themes which represent different ways of understanding the complexity of boundary crossing in pedagogical practice. We identify the shifting conjunctures of higher education in which key notions such as boundary crossing can demonstrate a strong attraction as well as its opposites in the form of strong rejection.
