School and Child Protection Services Professionals’ Views on the school’s Mission and Responsibilities for Children Living with Domestic Violence: Tensions and Gaps2019In: Journal of family Violence, ISSN 0885-7482, E-ISSN 1573-2851, p. 1-14Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the work presented here was to study how the Swedish compulsory school, identifies and acts relative to the social problem of children living with domestic violence. More specifically: how do the various professional groups in school and professionals within the child protection services (CPS) describe and understand their own and other professionals’ responsibilities and tasks with respect to children living with domestic violence? The study consisted of 10 focus groups whose members were taken from five professional groups in schools and the CPS in Sweden. The results show that professionals in school lack knowledge about living with domestic violence, one example of which is child abuse. They navigate through the large open space that exists between the pedagogic and psychosocial missions of schools, and use different strategies to interpret the child’s symptoms of maltreatment. They point at an unclear distribution of responsibility between different professionals in school, which can be interpreted as a tension between domains within the institutional school domain. They also point at a “gap” between the school and CPS domains, and find confidentiality to be an obstacle to collaboration. Furthermore, the article sheds light on the complexities, the conflicting understandings, and the different priorities of the different professionals and institutions working with children living with domestic violence. It also discusses practical implications of the results.

    Abstract [en]

In the year 1883 Sweden established its first summer holiday camp. The journey out into the archipelago with schoolchildren from one of the Stockholm parishes marked the beginning of a new sphere of activity within both the philanthropic sphere and in the area of preventive medicine. The holiday camps started out as a philanthropicproject and been a part of the welfare society. In this study Sweden's first holiday camp Society, the Society for Stockholm's School Holiday Camps, is the focal point. The Society's activity has been followed from the establishment of the first holiday camp in 1883 until the take-over by the middle class municipality in the middle of the nineteensixties. In the sources of the movement and in the political and social debate, the holiday camps were discussed primarily as a preventive medicine project. The purpose was to improve the physical and moral health of working class children. In the holiday camp the selected children would be able to participate in the good customs of the upper classes and a new behaviour be inculcated. After a while this would change, improve and normalise the population. From a topside-down perspective the image was communi-cated of a modern and successful cultivation project. However, it was important to problematise this image and discuss whether the ideas as formulated in the public rhetoric could be realised out in the holiday camps. Both the children and the staff ambitions have been discussed in relation to the social organisation - time and space- in the camps.

    Abstract [en]

One of the most characteristic signs of Swedish social policy is that it to a large extent consists of welfare services. One of the most important set of services is to support children and youth with different problems and kinds of needs. These various services are available in both the social child care and in municipal outpatient. An activity that is in both of these institutional place is the Swedish summer camps. The task of the summercamps is complex because it is a leisure activity against all children in a commune while it is used as a measure of the social child care. The main objective of the summer camps and their activities is to give the children and youth the opportunity to take part in activities and to get experiences that they would not be able to get with their families during the summer vacations. The purpose of this article is to study the selection process used to determine which children and youth that will be offered the possibility to go to a camp in a municipal with limited capacity. The empirical material consists of observational studies and interviews collected in a field work. It was collected during two meetings in children and adolescents were selected for three weeks summer camps in the municipality. The result shows that the work which should be governed by an established priority list is a complex process where the concept of need is important criterion. How the concept should be understood and used is however not defined and the evaluation and selection is therefore to a large extent governed by moral opinion and previous experiences among the persons in the selection committee. There is also a pragmatic explanation: According to an unwritten rule should each summer camp group consist of one third of children and youth with social problems and needs, one third of children with previous summer camp experience, and the last third of children and youth without social problems and needs. The selection process is therefore characterized by an assessment which is to reconcile the individual needs and problems of the child against the group needs/ activities

Vad är problemet: En vänbok till Bengt Sandin / [ed] Lind, Judith, Lindgren, Cecilia, Sjöberg, Mats & Zetterqvist Nelson, Linköping: LiU-tryck , 2009, 1Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]
