Tal, makt, vansinne: en vänbok till Ulf Olsson2013Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Media and Materiality in the Neo-Avant-Garde2012Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Explores the materiality of media technologies and their impact on the avant-garde of the late twentieth century. This title includes essays that range between different art forms and bridge the same contested cultural divides - high and low, ideology and form, art and everyday life - that were once challenged by the avant-garde.

Alfabetets användning. Konkret poesi och poetisk artefaktion i svenskt 1960-tal2005Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The subject of this dissertation is the so-called concrete poetry that was written in Sweden during the 1960s and, to a small extent, in the 1950s, by Öyvind Fahlström, Jarl Hammarberg, Åke Hodell, Bengt Emil Johnson, and others. The study is focused on a discussion of the forms and the ways of writing that were explored, but it also gives an account of the aesthetic-historical context – of the expanded field of the arts in the 1960s, of the early avant-garde, of related forms of writing in earlier literature, such as pattern poetry.

The readings are oriented toward different aspects of the texts, such as ’kneaded’ words, disruptive syntax, ’algorithmic’ forms and methods, visuality, and sonority. Two key concepts are ’artifice’ and ’materiality’, both of which indicate how the texts discussed complicate a view of poetry as ’pure’ expression of thought and emotion, or as representation of speech or language (in a restricted sense). These writings use the alphabet in an unorthodox way, and they transgress its territory by approaching other arts and other forms of ’writing’.

If one of the aims of the study is to analyze the poetical forms and operations at stake, another one is to connect these to a modern ’media age’, and to discuss the impact of media technologies as well as new conceptions and theories of writing, information, and communication (for example, cybernetics) on poetry. This contextualization gives a specific meaning and value to the texts, and paves the way for a series of questions about reading, subjectivity, and political aspects of poetry.

    Abstract [en]

The Dissertation as Critical Practice: Other Forms, Other Media

This article (a talk presented at Lund University on October 12, 2012) explores linguistic and rhetorical form, and formal operations, in academic studies in comparative literature – and their relationship to form in poetry and fiction writing. The article also discusses how an awareness and exploration of academic language and formalistic decisions contributes to the academic text. Some examples (by Charles Bernstein and Christian Bök) of such an understanding of the critic’s language are discussed, and, eventually, the question of how new media and, more specifically, digital text can transform the language and form of academic literary studies is addressed through a brief look at the important online journal Vectors.

Connect and Immerse: A Poetry of Codes and Signals2012In: Journal of Aesthetics & Culture, E-ISSN 2000-4214, Vol. 4Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates how codes and signals were employed in avant-garde poetry and art in the 1960s, and how such attempts were performed in the wake of cybernetics and (partly) through the use of new media technologies, such as the tape recorder and the computer. This poetry - as exemplified here by works by Åke Hodell, Peter Weibel, and Henri Chopin - not only employed new materials, media, and methods for the production of poems; it also transformed the interface of literature and the act of reading through immersion in sound, through the activation of different cognitive modes, and through an intersensorial address. On the one hand, this literary and artistic output can be seen as a response to the increasing intermedation (in Katherine Hayles’s sense) in culture and society during the last century. On the other hand, we might, as contemporary readers, return to these poetic works in order to use them as media archaeological tools that might shed light on the aesthetic transformations taking place within new media today.

Croaks and Calls: posthuman sound ecologies in the neo-avant-garde2021In: Tuning in to the Neo-Avant-Garde: experimental radio plays in the postwar period / [ed] Inge Arteel, Lars Bernaerts, Siebe Bluijs and Pim Verhulst, Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2021, p. 87-105Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter investigates how media historical transformations in the decades after the Second World War affected radio art and sound poetry and, especially, their (re)presentations of humans and animals. Apart from new sound technologies (e.g. the tape recorder), information technology and cybernetics are crucial here, not least in promoting an ‘ecologisation’ (Erich Hörl) of thinking and being, which problematises anthropocentrism and subject-object configurations. Instead, there is a transition to relationality and immersion. In this chapter, the potential of sound for staging and exploring such a transition is investigated and underlined through analyses of radio art and poetry by Swedish artists and poets Åke Hodell and Öyvind Fahlström, partly framed by a discussion of Samuel Beckett’s early radio play, All That Fall (1956). In the Swedish works, attention is paid to birds and their calls primarily, but also to other sounds, which displace the human voice and gaze as organising agencies and establish a more diffuse and open acoustic space and time. The latter is designated as a ‘posthuman sound ecology’, which stresses not only the sonic presence of other beings, but also a poetically shaped and playful transmutation of the established, almost naturalised, hierarchies and relations between humans and non-humans.

    Abstract [de]

Textbeiträge von: Fred Andersson, Antonio Sergio Bessa, Jean-François Bory, Klaus Peter Dencker, Jacques Donguy, Sabine Gebhardt Fink, Annette Gilbert, Eugen Gomringer, Sabine Hänsgen, Simone Homem de Mello, Franz Mon, Jesper Olsson, Gerhard Rühm, Anne Thurmann-Jajes
