Johanna, Moa and I'm every lesbian: gender, sexuality and class in Norrköping's industrial landscape2018In: Gender and heritage: performance, place and politics / [ed] Wera Grahn, Ross J. Wilson, London: Routledge, 2018, 1, p. 17-29Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, we use the competing narratives and performances of four guided walks as the basis for a discussion of heritage in the intersection of gender, sexuality and class in the urban landscape of Norrköping, Sweden. Three of the walks focus on the life of straight, white, working-class women, while one offers a lesbian narrative thus disrupting the other walks. All the walks dealt with are part of recent projects to render female experiences visible so as to connect to current agendas and include them in the heritage for the future. They also testify to the difficulties of incorporating social complexity and intersectionality in heritage productions such as city walks.

    Abstract [en]

Supporting students to master the transition from secondary school to university is a challenge that occupies educators in many countries. In order to support the students in effective ways, we need to know what subject conceptions and subject knowledge they bring to academic studies. In this study, the authors draw on questionnaire data from 462 student teachers in Sweden. The questionnaires were filled in the first week the students studied history at university. Among the students, some trained to be history teachers at primary and elementary school, whereas others trained to be history teachers at secondary school. The results indicate there are both similarities and differences between the student groups. Those training to become history teachers at primary and elementary school identified with the teacher profession but less so with the subject of history. Those studying to become history teachers at secondary school tended to identify with the subject but less so with the teacher profession. Most students argued that history is important in order to understand the present. All student groups manifested knowledge about “time-spaces” of the past, i.e. they were able to show a rough chronological framework. A minority among the students manifested a chaotic chronological order. Among students studying to become teachers at secondary school, there is a tendency that they have weaker knowledge about older history and Nordic history as compared to modern history and Swedish and world history.

1800-talets skolväsende2008In: Signums svenska kulturhistoria: Karl Johantiden / [ed] Jakob Christensson, Stockholm: Bokförlaget Signum, 2008Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

2017, Stockholm: Historielärarnas förening , 2017, p. 153-173Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Enhancing Student Learning in History: Perspectives on University History Teaching2012Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The success or failure of students in history courses really matters. Therefore, historians must take teaching seriously. They should base their teaching upon systematic, self-critical reflection, discuss their teaching with students and colleagues and launch research into history teaching and learning. In Enhancing Student Learning in History the authors report on studies that, taken together, provide important knowledge about what makes teaching and learning of history in higher education effective. They discuss questions such as: What are the bottlenecks to student learning in history? What are student perceptions of history fieldwork? How effective is the case-metod in history education? and What are the challenges for scholarship of teaching and learning in history?

    Abstract [en]

Student teachers in Sweden conducted structured inquiry projects in which they investigated school children’s understanding of history. Analysis of the student teachers’ written assignments indicates ambivalence on part of the student teachers. On the one hand, they want to change both content and teaching methods in the subject of history, but on the other hand many of them seem happy with how things are. Further, the student teachers want to take the interests and needs of their pupils seriously, but they do not reflect much on what will be the practical consequences of this for their teaching. The student teachers did not use a specialised vocabulary when discussing history and history teaching, which indicates the academic training they have got may be inadequate. It appears that the investigations challenged the beliefs of the student teachers about children’s prior knowledge. After taking part in the projects, the student teachers claimed they had developed a new appreciation for children’s prior ideas. These findings suggest that structured investigations, focused on specific disciplinary content, have the potential to encourage student teachers’ reflection on their pupils’ cognition.

In the 1970s, historical documentarists Olle Häger and Hans Villius at the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation made both a documentary and a dramatic television production about the famine years of the 1860s. The productions indicate that a class perspective dominated popular culture at the time. Yet, not least the documentary ("Ett satans år," [One Year of Satan] 1977) is evidence of how media producers sought to communicate seriously about famine in the past, at the same time relating to contemporary issues.

The Historian-Filmmaker's Dilemma: Historical Documentaries in Sweden in the Era of Häger and Villius2003Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates how history is used in historical documentary films, and argues that the maker of such films constantly negotiates between cognitive, moral, and aesthetic demands. In support of this contention is discussed a number of historical documentaries by Swedish historian-filmmakers Olle Häger and Hans Villius. Other historical documentaries supply additional examples. The analyses take into account both the production process and the representations themselves. The history culture and the social field of history production together form the conceptual framework for the study, and one of the aims is to analyse the role of professional historians in public life. The analyses show that different considerations compete and work together in the case of all documentaries, and figure at all stages of pre-production, production, and post-production. But different considerations have particular influence at different stages in the production process and thus they are more or less important depending on where in the process the producer puts his emphasis on them. In the public service television setting, the tendency to make cognitive considerations is strong. For example, historical documentarists often engage historians as advisors, and work long and hard interpreting visual source materials such as photographs. The Häger and Villius case also indicates that the influence exerted on programmes by aesthetic considerations grows as the filmmaker learns about the medium. Among general conclusions are that it is not always important that the producer be a trained historian. What is crucial is that whoever is to succeed in making fine historical programmes must learn both history and filmmaking, must learn to balance the demands of content and form. Previously, researchers have suggested that historical documentaries function as entertainment, orientation, and restoration; this study adds the functions of interpretation and legitimisation. Finally, the study submits that typically historical documentaries attempt to convey cognitive and moral insights about the past.

    Abstract [en]

Teaching an historical period is both easy and very difficult. Because content knowledge about past societies, processes, peoples and events is vast, we cannot cover it all in a single course. Therefore, every teacher must define the central content to be taught and learned. This chapter discusses principles for selecting content and suggests that the key question is: what do students need to learn? Considering the limited number of teaching hours in the modern university, scaffolding remains an important function of teaching history, helping students to understand central aspects of the period in question. But equally as important, the classroom should be treated as an opportunity to engage the students and to entice them into the world of the past. Drawing on a course on the early modern period taught at a Swedish university, this chapter suggests a number of ways this could be done including strategies such as the crafted use of questions, designing learning activities on difficult content and varying forms for teaching. The aim is to make students active learners.
